I will be a senior next fall and applying soon at the start. I have been looking into specifically petroleum engineering and materials science/engineering schools. I would like to know my chances to the schools I have narrowed down to.
These schools include:
University of Illniois Urbana-Champaign, Purdue University, Colorado School of Mines, Texas A and M University, University of Minnesota, University of Texas Austin, and University of Washington.
My unweighted GPA is a 3.41 as of the end of sixth semester. My weighted GPA is on a 5.33 scale, and is 3.94. Converted to a 5.0 scale, I believe it to be 4.2 (if I did the calculator right.) My school doesn’t have class averages but instead gives out the median (may be the average though) GPA. I know the average weighted GPA for the two classes above my own were within a tenth of 3.8 respectively. So my GPA may be at, or around the 50th percentile. My work ethic freshman and to a part of sophomore year was non-existent and resulted in an around 2.85 or 2.9 weighted GPA. I’ve improved much more over the last 3 semesters than the first.
My ACT score, however, is a 34 composite and an 11 on the writing, with all the sub-scores being 34 excluding English as a 33. I don’t think most colleges take average ACT of the high school, but if it does matter, the average is a 27.5 according to a released statistic from the school.
As for extracurriculars. freshmen year I only participated in bowling (as a sport) and paintball club. Sophomore year, I participated in Cross Country, Bowling and Track as well as paintball club. Junior Year, I participated in Cross Coutnry, Bowling, and Track, but no paintball club. I am not captain for any of the sports, except for bowling, which isn’t decided till the season starts in late october/early november. As for if the captain position will make a difference at that point, the probability of around medium since its a small team, and I’m well known, however, I wouldn’t say its concrete at all.
Other than school related extracurriculars I have some volunteer work from many places. I have many fundraisers multiple times a year from church, some fire department pancake breakfast assistance for two years, a public works earthday recycling drive for two years, a clean up a beach service project. About ten hours or so on different days at a woodland conservatory, mowing an old ladies lawn and outdoors maintenance down the street for no profit for the last four years. There is more minor stuff, but those are probably the greatest things I can remember for now.
Not sure if it matters for getting chanced, but I am going to receive two teacher recommendations. One from my sophomore and junior year German teacher and my junior year Physics teacher.
All the schools I listed are reach schools than the ones I have not listed. I genuniely would like to know how much of a chance I may or may not have.
Also, I’m a white male, so no affirmative action there, and my family income is around 110k per year.

I did the calculations for the weighted GPA wrong, and its actually a 3.7 not a 4.2. I performed the wrong operation.
