Chances for Regular Decision

Here are my statistics:

Gender: Male
Ethnicity: South Asian

SAT1: 2210 (CR:690 M:720 W:800), 2060 (CR:640, M:750, W:690)
SAT2: 800 on Math II, 770 on Biology, 740 on Chemistry, 680 on French
WGPA: 4.6750 (on a 5.0 scale)

Class Rank: 33/329

AP Scores: 4 on Comp Sci AB

Senior Schedule: AP French, AP Calculus BC, AP Statistics, AP Physics, all others at honours/elective level

EC’s: Math Team, Speech and Debate Team (5-10 hr/week - strong performer at local tournaments), Robotics Team

Volunteering: 90 hrs at hospital, 60 hours at local community center

Awards: National Merit Commended Scholar, RIT Computing Medal

Recommendations: one good, one bad

Essays: decent, nothing special

Schools at CMU: SCS, CIT, Tepper

Your chances would be improved if you don’t send in a bad recommendation.

My recommendation isn’t that terrible - it just is meh. Besides, I don’t think it is fair to not send it because of the time and effort invested by the teacher in writing it. I guess I should have better “gauged” (of lack of a better terminology) the teacher’s enthusiasm in writing me a recommendation.

Doesn’t CMU only ask for one recommendation? (Might have changed from two years ago,) If so, you really don’t need to send the less good one in.

Dear Mathsmom,

When I read your comments I have a feeling that you know a lot. I have a question regarding the stats about students who are not the CC types. Do students have chances even though their scores and GPA are not upto CC standards? Say for example, a student who is working hard and getting all A’s in the junior and senior year, would that have a good impact on the officers?
Thanks

bump…

I am wondering about my chances and about which schools should I apply to?

My EC’s are slightly weak and my senior grades are poor (C in Statistics YIKES!)

I am thinking: SCS, CIT, MCS

chi62, I wish I knew more, I’m the parent of a Carnegie Mellon sophomore. I was a student member of an admissions committee (for architecture) when I was a grad student at Columbia, so I have some experience in how at least one admissions committee worked. There was a post earlier this year where a student posted that sophomore and junior year grades are the most important (he’d asked an admissions officer). But really I have pretty much the same information you do - the range of scores and grades they publish at [Admission Statistics](<a href=“Home - Computing Services - Office of the CIO - Carnegie Mellon University”>Home - Computing Services - Office of the CIO - Carnegie Mellon University) Every year a quarter of the class will have at least some of their scores and grades in the bottom quarter, but I don’t know how low they’ll go or what other hooks those lower scoring students may bring to the table. (Sports star, underrepresented minority etc.) MIT also gives a fairly nice breakdown of their acceptance statistics for comparison: [url=http://www.mitadmissions.org/topics/apply/admissions_statistics/]MIT Admissions: Admissions Statistics/url

Dear Mathmom,

Thanks for that. I got accepted in Drexel for engineering. Can you please tell me the pros and cons about this university? I know that they have a good coop program. But is this a good university? Please tell me from your experience.

Thanks

Don’t know anything about Drexel - it wasn’t on our radar.
