Chances for Stern and UMich for a CCer passionate about business

Hey, I am considering NYU Stern and UMich in my college list and I was wondering what are my chances if I apply early. I think I am a unique applicant, but I’ll leave the judging to you. Thanks.

Race: Half Hispanic, half Bengali
Parents make about $20,000 combined
I am from Florida

School stuff:

UW GPA: 3.4 - 3.5
W GPA: 4.5
RANK: 20/428
Highest courseload possible with 7 Honors, 12 APs and 2 CC cources.

Testing: (This is where I prolly stand out more)

ACT : 32 (first try 22)

My activities:
1.) Business Professionals of America: Chapter founder and president

2.) CEO of a business selling 60 top brands of watches with over $18,000 in
gross income in one year.

3.) Co-founder/Administrator of the world’s fastest growing (and so far
largest) political forum on the net. It has over 50k members, 12k thread,
and 300k posts. The forum is top 1% in Alexa and PR rankings.

4.) Be a Scholar, Inc. : This is the non-profit organization I founded and got
incorporated by the state of Florida. As CEO, I made partnerships with
other non-profits and gathered 20k book and donated to Nicaragua as
well as some African nations.

5.) Strategic Business Institute: Researcher and public Relations.

Community Service: OVER 1318 CS HOURS SO FAR
I basically spent all this time tutoring math to elementary and middle school children with initially grades of C and below. I taught 131 kids, and by the end of the Semester, 129 ended up with As and 2 with Bs. This was a major experience and accomplishment for me.

Awards/Honors:

1.) Florida American Legion Boys State: Elected Senator. Ran for lieutenant Goveror but lost
2.) Better Business Bureau (BBB) : 2nd place in Business Plan competition
3.) Presidential Volunteer Service Award
4.) Straightfoward Media Business Award
5.) National Peace essay contest by US Institute of Peace
6.) National AP Scholar

I’m expecting my essay should be good. Its about my experiences in a trip to a village in Bangladesh (Jamalpur) and about the culture and hardship about the people there and how that shaped my personality.

I am expecting all my Recs to be glowing as well.

So what are my chances? Do you think my gpa will kill me given my good rank and courseload? THANKS I will make sure to comment on your “my chance” thread if you post one.

u are either grossly exaggerating your EC’s… or else why are you even applying for STern, you can go for harvard

I am not exaggerating. My gpa is poor (as you can see ) I have a whole bunch of Bs and 2 Cs. My ECs are not predictions, i have already accomplished them. I think Harvard would say “no” to someone with a 3.4 :(

with your test scores and URM, who knows? They might actually accept you. Your numerical GPA is looked at in the context of your school, and as they will see you are top 5%, your 3.5 might equal a 3.8 at another school I would try for Wharton early if I were you, as you probably will get into either (if not both) UMich or Stern rd

Really? Thanks for the encouragement. I think my gpa is 3.4 btw. I’m not really a prestige whore, I would still like to know my chances for UMich and Stern. I am not really interested in an Ivy League other than Cornell. Thanks for the reply.

You do, and Ivies aren’t just about prestige–I could care less about prestige and I’m going to Penn in the fall You’ll get a great education from Wharton, too, and there’s nothing wrong with having the prestige come along with it

gmman, congrats on your acceptance to Penn. Its true that there’s nothing wrong with applying to an Ivy but I feel most people do so because of its prestige. Penn is a great school, awesome social scene and of course, there’s Wharton. I am usually try to tay up with reality, and I feel than wharton is a reach based on my GPA. Do you think wharton adcoms will look pass my GPA?

KillerAngel, I’m sure they will–the rest of your application is so awesome that they’d have to. No school will put you in the reject pile just because of a 3.4 GPA, because different schools grade differently. Also, from what I hear, Wharton is more about the essays/ecs anyway, and yours will probably be great :D

witty24: I applied SEAS, so I don’t know how helpful my stats would be, assuming your applied Wharton. I had great test scores, mediocre gpa/rank (as in barely top 20%), extremely hard courseload…

URM with great test scores and awesome ecs, you should be aiming for Wharton.

With Michigan, your GPA might hurt you quite a bit. A few people from the Michigan forum were deferred with 1490 SAT and ~3.3 gpas. Michigan is big on URMs though, so that should help you out quite a bit.

I think you have a better chance at Stern than Wharton–everyone does, as far as I know (I don’t know that much about NYU, so don’t trust me on that), but since your chances are pretty good at both you should be aiming for Wharton IMO.

I was accepted to Michigan based on a 30 ACT and tied with two others for first in a class of 173. However, my small town Missouri school has only one AP class, and is not in the same league as yours. After being accepted, I did get a 32 ACT. Your credentials are much better than mine, but Michigan seems to reward early applicants more than other schools (and they say so in their literature).
