Essays: I have no idea.

Recommendations: I have no idea (they are sealed and it’s against school policy to share even if the teacher wants to); however, I do know that one of my recommenders (is that a word?) switched with the one the school assigned, saying that after having me for three years it would be wrong of him not to write a letter - and he taught me in my worst subject.

So… do I have a reasonable chance?
A chance?
A hope?

You sound like the quintessential Long Island applicant: rich white boy, private school, decent grades, fancy clubs that reek of money. However, you are the quintessential LI applicant with above-average (even for top schools outside of MIT and Caltech) SAT scores - although this is not as impressive as if you’d have such scores when coming from the boonies of NYS. It’s a toss-up; your odds are fairly good, but it’ll all come down to whether there’s anything in your essays that makes you interesting and/or whether they feel like admitting yet another rich LI kid the day that your application is reviewed (I’m not saying being rich is a negative thing, I’m just saying that many LI applicants are very similar to you). As with 95% of Chances threads, no one can tell you with any confidence whether you’ll be in or out. I personally would say you’re in (although the fact that you applied to HumEc makes me less confident than had you applied to CAS).

Yeah your scores and grades are great on paper but your similar to a lot of other applicants. I see some ec’s but nothing that really jumps out and says unique. It will really come down to how passionate and centered your essay’s are to PAM. I hope you visited the campus, seems to help a lot for human ec applicants. Also realize us westchester/nyc/LI kids are going to get screwed this year. NYS is slashing the funding all while us applicants from NY are increasing. Not good news. I’d estimate you at a 50-50 shot.

Lol maybe it’s because i’m from LI as well (public school) but…how are his clubs very fancy and how do they reek of money? He volunteers at a hospital where he’s VP of some volunteer group, he’s the lighting guy in the school auditorium, he’s in the orchestra, drama club, works at the library and is in an academic quiz club…pretty standard school activities. the only atypical one is the TV studio…

seb, I don’t know much about chances, but good luck. you seem bright and well-rounded.

I knew a girl from last year who was hispanic and had very similar stats from L.I. She was deferred and ultimately given a GT. I think a lot of weight is placed on essays and correlation of ECs. I think you definitely stand a chance
