Chances for UCLA, Berkeley, UC Davis, and UVA?

<p>I’m a senior in VA and considering on double majoring in Drama (Technical Design) and Business (most likely finance)!</p>

<p>Stats</p>

<p>Race: Asian (Chinese) </p>

<p>GPA: 3.83 unweighted, 4.23 weighted
SAT: 2120 (planning on retaking in October) Math - 720 \ Reading - 730 \ Writing - 670
SAT II: Math 1 - 700 \ US History - 670 </p>

<p>AP Scores: (very bad I know)
APWH - 4
APUSH - 4
AP Physics B - 3
AP Lang - 3</p>

<p>Currently Taking: AP Bio, AP Japanese, AP Lit, AP Gov and Comparative, AB Calc</p>

<p>Class Rank: Our school doesn’t do class rank but I know I’m at least in the top 25% </p>

<p>Other:

  • Summer Internship at a ballroom dancing dress shop, but it ended really badly since my boss wouldn’t give me time off to do college apps so I quit.
  • I’m a popular fashion/sewing blogger and have an online store but I’m not sure if I should put that in or if that sounds really pretentious and I really dont want admission officers to be like “wow you sound like you have a big ego” </p>

<p>Extra Concerns (I’m sorry if this is too long):

  • When I say costuming, I really mean cosplay (but I am passionate in costuming/sewing in general) however I’m afraid if I list the convention names and even the word ‘cosplay’ the admissions will read it and think I’m really immature. I was going to write my common app essay on it but I’m not too sure if its acceptable.
  • Every time I compare my stats with my other Asian friends I feel like crap b/c I don’t have any academic achievements like debate or model UN although that feels more like teenage angst and brooding…</p>

<p>I’d say that your chances as an in-state applicant to UVA are excellent, as are your chances at UC Davis. You definitely meet eligibility requirements for Berkeley and UCLA, but I wouldn’t say either is a sure thing. Do they all have separate undergraduate Business schools? If so, they might be more selective than the regular Arts & Science colleges, and it might be very difficult to combine a Theater major with Business. My son got into Davis from out of state with much lower stats than yours. </p>

<p>Honestly I might just go in as undecided but I’m really leaning towards business or maybe economics as a major but nothing is set in stone yet. </p>

<p>My son did not choose to attend Davis, but he liked it enough to apply. I had envisioned the campus as flat and dull, but it’s very attractive, and Davis is a pleasant college town. </p>

<p>Davis at full fees. UCLA and Berkeley are really hard to get into for instate students with those stats. I wouldn’t count on getting into Berkeley or LA.</p>

<p>@"aunt bea"‌ Do you think I should still attempt applying to both or just try my luck with one of them? I don’t really want to waste time on both of them if I can focus on just one or two UC apps. </p>

<p>All of the UCs share a single application so it is not additional time. I just returned from attending a counselor conference at UCLA and your numbers are certainly in range. The 2014 middle 50 scored 1930-2220 on SAT and had 3.89UW/4.39W average GPA. Warning the scores are much higher for engineering however. What major interests you? Your choice of major will have a big impact on your chances at any of these schools.</p>

<p>@monarch1‌ I thought the essay portions were different for every UC school? I’ve really only looked at Berkeley’s so far. I’m not going to be an engineer thats for sure but it doesn’t look like my GPA is in the range for LA. I’m gunning for double major in technical theater and business but I honestly have no concrete plan. </p>

<p>Try applying to all three but you need to know that you will be full fee since you are OOS. LA and Berkeley are tough. They get thousands of applicants and you have to have something that stands out to even be considered. The higher the test scores, the better your chances. Also, I would focus on the sewing but through a different perspective i.e.: using sewing terms to get through your essay, or teaching the reader how to sew a “book bag” through your essay. etc.</p>
