Chances for UC's and others

I was wondering what my chances for some of these schools were. I have good EC’s. My 9-11 UW GPA is 3.74, 10-11 UW is 3.65, 9-11 W GPA is 4.2, 10-11 W GPA is 4.35, UC GPA is 4.05. I got a 2040 on the SAT, retaking in October(aiming for 2200-2300), 780 Math IIC (aiming for 800), 640 Bio(aiming for 750+ on physics, already took Physics AP C Mech.), 620 USH (aiming for 700+). Taking IIC, Physics, and USH in November. Im studying for all of these SAT’s in the summer. Im a cal. resident, and an african-american male. School doesn’t rank, but def. top 10%.

I’ll apply to: Harvard, Princeton, MIT, Stanford, Dartmouth, Northwestern, UPenn, Duke, UC Berkeley, UCLA, and UCSD.

How much of an advantage would i get by getting my SATs up, i know they’re a bit low now.

anyone there?

Lower scoring people get into Ivies all the time, but having that 2200-2400 SAT means one less thing to worry about.

Assuming you get all your SAT scores up, you should be a good match for both the Ivies and the UCs. Good luck.

Hypothetically, what if i cant bring them up?

Crack 2100 for any shot at all at HPSM and any other very top school. They get all the top minorities applying.

UCB/UCLA: Slight Reach
UCSD: Match

whats the average SAT II scores for UCB, UCLA, and UCSD? I can only seem to find the SAT I scores. For some reason UCB/UCLA are around 2040, but this seems a bit low.

any other opinions?

well id say that ucb n ucla would be matches since you are instate. for the others…hypothetically if u dont bring your scores up…then they are all probably reaches

You need to get some more practical options; you assume in your OP that you will just be able to jump up 100 points in all of your SAT sections–more often than not it doesn’t work out like that. Check out Davis, Irvine, SDSU, and USC for a more rounded college list.

^^Are you ■■■■■■■■? He is definitely qualified enough for UCSD, and since its point based, he should be able to count on acceptance there. Furthermore, i wouldnt be surprised if he got into a few of those private schools as well.

i wouldnt say ucsd is for sure. ucsd is a match for the poster, and ucla and uc berkeley would be slight reaches. i believe the average admit into ucsd has around a 1950, and ucla and uc berkeley around a 2050. average admit for 2005 was a 1307 for ucsd and around 1340 for ucla and 1360 for uc berkeley. having some safeties like irvine davis santa barbara ect would be a good idea not because i dont think he will get into sd or la or berkeley, but because at best they are matches, and not guarenteed by any meens.

We did have some kids from our school get into Berkeley/LA with 1700 SATs or 3.0 GPA’s, i dunno if that means anything.

Well, it seems almost impossible to get into Berkeley and UCLA with those stats (3.0 GPA and 1700 SAT total) unless they got in with the extra points allowed for people who:

(1) come from low income or disadvantaged areas
(2) one or both parents who never went to college
(3) a specialty in a particular field such as much, microbiology studies, top academic specialty, or recruited as a varsity athlete

Since I believe what yousay is true, it makes me realize that you probably come from a high school that the UCs have determined is “disadvantaged” and where at least some of the students have parents who did not go to college.

If you fall into one or both of these categories, then your chances of getting into UCLA and/or UC Berkeley with those stats of yours are greater than for the average student in California–and would make you a match at both schools. Obviously, you are a match for UCSD with or without this situation.

As far as the other schools, you need to be in the top 5% or so of your school to have a good shot at Harvard, Princeton, Stanford, MIT, and Duke. On the other hand, with these grades and test scores and as a URM, I think you have a good shot at UPenn and Northwestern.

Good luck to you.

um… hard to say… ucsd and all the uc’s below that you are in… ucla is a very very slight match… but your cutting it close… raise your sats 2100+ for safetu… your ec’s??? uc berkeley also might be a slight reach… raise your sats and pick a great ec and your in. My friend had a 4.04 W and 2160 on the SAT and got into UCLA… but rejected from Berkeley… 4.0 W and 2100 is the tipping point

the rest of the schools you will get rejected unless your a legacy, first gen, athleet or if you get your sats up 100-200 points… for those schools 2200 is the cutoff

Yeah, im gonna try to get the scores up. But, i dont think theres any cut off, even for a school like MIT, some of the students get 600s on the math part, or even 400s/500s on the verbal. I’m gonna try the ACT too, if that will help.

@Calcruzer:
Thanks that really helped.

you would have a pretty good chance at ivys, as their are very discriminatory in terms of race. i think harvard has a specific racial percentage (ie 19% asian, 1% native american, 20% black etc.). But anyways, it would help if you listed your ECs like any varsity sports.

Yeah, I’m in two. Do sports really make that much of a difference though?
