Chances for UCSC, CSULB, Cal Poly

Hello, I am Junior and I am wondering what my chances are at the three aforementioned schools. I got an overall un-weighted GPA of a 3.6 Freshman year (I was JV Captain of the Wrestling Team as my EC), Sophomore year I had a weighted GPA of 3.9 (JV Mathlete as my EC), this year first semester I had a weighted GPA of 3.5 (VP of Latin Club, College Club member, Website Editor for the school Paper, Varsity Mathlete, and volunteering, oh and a member of a 5 student WASC committee for accreditation). So where does that put me in standing for either of these schools? One big flaw I have is I got a D my first semester of Calculus this year, and I am unsure how I can fix it. I heard taking it again first semester next year could fix it but I am not sure, any insight into that matter would be helpful too. Thank you for your time!

P.S. I am applying to UCSC as a Film/Media Major and would eventually double major in Anthropology. I am applying to CSULB as a Journalism and film double major, and at Cal Poly in the Journalism program (and hopefully double major in Graphic Communications but CP has a tough double major program).

CSULB isn’t very tough to get into.
UCSC is definitely one of the easier UCs to get into, but still tougher than most state schools.
Cal Poly is hard to say, as it is so competitive.

You don’t have a lot in the means of Extracurriculars, so I don’t know how much help those will be. You still have some time, so I recommend doing something that will REALLY set you apart from other applicants. The summer before my senior year, I did a summer program at Brown University, which really helped me stand out from other applicants.
It looks like your GPA is alright. There’s definitely going to be a LOT of other applicants with higher GPAs than you, so make sure you keep that up throughout junior and senior years.
I think if you do well on the SAT, you may have a good chance at all of these.
My friend goes to UCSC as a film major, and he loves it! I really hope you get into these schools!!!

I’m a senior right now, so I can’t really say for sure if you have a great shot or not, but I have done a TON of research in the last few months while waiting for decisions to be released. I applied to Cal Poly and UCSC, but not Long Beach.
Good luck with everything!!!

Thanks! I am currently working on a documentary about a local band that revitalized the music scene in my hometown, I’m hoping that sets me apart on my application. I need to look at summer programs, I am not sure where I could go though. I appreciate the feedback!
