Essay: Should be pretty good. Going to make my own question, something like the first common app prompt. Have to shorten my Common App essay by 200 words though :(

Other schools I’m applying to (no order):
Cornell University
Penn State
Rutgers
University of Virginia

Cornell is my first choice (applied ED), but I realize that it’s a pretty big reach. If I get rejected from Cornell, UMD will be my first choice… I want to go there more now because I heard they built a new weather and climate prediction center on campus (which was opened like days ago).

I think you will have good chance of acceptance but why not apply by the priority application deadline?

Agree with momof3greatgirls - you should apply by Nov 1 priority deadline.

It is NOT a commitment -it is NOT ED or EA -therefore I believe that it does not violate your ED pledge…you can double-check that but I believe you are agreeing not to apply ED to any other school, but other apps are ok…

My essay isn’t exactly ready yet. Is it worth rushing it? What are the benefits of applying early?

And yes, it will not break the ED agreement.

You have a good chance. And even though your essays are not ready, you have about 10 days. So you should try to write them and do the Nov. 1st deadline. They are only 300 word essays…

Also, college park does not look at SAT II scores

You can only be considered for merit scholarships and special programs if you apply early. I think you can write some quality essays before the deadline

I’m kind of surprised that you could say UMCP is your first choice after Cornell, and not know this.

UMCP says that students who apply by Nov. 1 will get “best consideration.” I’ll admit, that’s kind of vague. I think I know what it means, but I only think I know what it means.

UMCP also says that only students who apply by Nov. 1 will be eligible for merit scholarships, or for admission to the university’s honors program or College Park Scholars.

Yes, it’s totally worth it to make sure you apply by Nov. 1.

(x-post with Yellowdog99)

I didn’t know about it because I was never even thinking about applying early to UMD. Trust me, I’ve read A LOT into their Atmospheric/Oceanic Science program.

Depends if my GC will let me apply early. For EA schools (I’m aware this isn’t EA, but it’s the same date as one), we should have all of our stuff done by October 15th so they have time to send everything. However, I know him quite well so maybe he’ll give me a bit of leeway.

There’s a pretty compelling reason for him to do so. I hope he’ll give you a break in this. Show him that web page if you need to.

Even the in-state top high schools have STRONGLY advised ALL students to apply before November 1.
