Can someone chance me for these three colleges? I know it seems like an eclectic list, but I’m trying to tour these three schools this summer and get a feel for different geographical regions. I’m kind of worried because I don’t have very impressive test scores, ECs, or awards, but here goes!
Before I start, I’m rising senior and a black female from a southern state, but I don’t want to rely too heavily on being a minority. I’m not a first generation college student. My family is middle class and may not qualify for much need-based aid, but I have several younger siblings who still need to be taken care of and educated.
I have a 3.9 UW and a 4.2-4.4 W. My school has an odd weighting system that I’ve yet to figure out, but most calculations I’ve done place me in this range. Either way, it’s been pretty steady the past few years with a couple of 89s in the math and science areas that I manage to bring up during second semester.
My school doesn’t rank, but I am in the top 10%.
As far as course rigor, I took all available honors courses for freshmen and sophomores (Pre-AP Geometry, Physics w/ Math Emphasis, Pre-AP Freshman English, Pre-AP Algebra II, Pre-AP Chemistry, Pre-AP Sophomore English, and Honors French II).
Junior year, I took AP Lit, APUSH, AP Bio, Honors French III, and Pre-AP Pre-Calc. I haven’t received my scores back, but I’m pretty confident in 4+ in Lit and USH. Bio…
Here’s to hoping.
For senior year, I’m taking AP Lang, AP Calculus AB, AP Psychology, and Honors French IV.
Test Scores
:
Act: Highest in one sitting is a 29, but I’m confident I got it into the 30s with this past exam. Current composite is a 31.
SAT I: For the new exam, my highest is a 1310, but like the ACT, I’m fairly certain I raised it on the last test. Current highest scores are 740 CR/W and 570 M
SAT II: Haven’t taken any subject tests yet, but if I reached my goal score on the last SAT I, I plan on taking US History and/or English in October.
ECs:
I’ve been in a school choir for 3 years that regularly does out-of-school performances and regional/state competitions, but I don’t know if that counts.
Three different audition-only ensembles, each for only 1-2 years (due to termination, exiting teachers, etc.)
Creative writing club- 3 years
Local African American college prep group- 3 years
(We’re also heavily involved in community service, particularly with child literacy and education, the Boys and Girls Club, and at-risk youths.)
College Rep Squad- 3 years
Young Artists club- 1 year (sophomore, will participate again in senior year)
FBLA- 1 year (sophomore, will participate again in senior year)
Cross Cultural Club- 1 year (junior, will participate again in senior year)
I’m also a member of my school’s National Beta Club, National Honors Society, and National French Honors Society, but these clubs don’t do much.
Other ECs that I’ve done/am doing are private voice lessons, my local American Heart Association Sweethearts program, Girls State (where I nearly achieved the position of Senator for my city!
), and two programs with my state university for technology and business. I’m also in the process of getting a summer job which, depending on my performance, may lead into the school year. I also plan on applying to be an English tutor when school starts back.
Leadership:
Possible choir section leader as a senior, possible offices in creative writing, literary magazine, college rep squad, cross cultural club, and ensemble
Volunteer Work:
Volunteered as a TA-type at a daycare for two summers
Several hours volunteering at my local hospital
Several hours as a TA-type at an art and musical theatre camp
Sunday school teacher at my church for two years
Awards:
Several basic HS awards/honorable mentions for having the highest GPA in various classes
I think that’s about it! So feel free to be real with me about the merit aid chances, ECs, test scores, leadership positions, etc. and suggest some things I can do to approve before I start applying in the fall!
Thanks in advance
