Thank you, what are some schools that still have a decent reputation that I have a shot at
Thank you so much!
No need to be embarrassed of being rejected. S24 applied 20 schools, he got rejected by 10 of them . As long as you have balance list of Reach/Target/Safety, you will be OK. Remember overall college acceptance rate doesnât apply to CS and ENG majors. You want to have few schools to choose from by May 1st.
For free SAT preparation, go to Khan Academy. S24 was able to improve from 1200s to 1400s using practice tests there. Good Luck.
Yes sorry, integrated physics and chemistry. My school offers up to Spanish 3, but Iâm not sure what you mean by sure thing for admission
Yes I am a junior and I believe I may be taking a calculus class next year, but if not, I will try to do so over the summer right away
Thank you so much
As far as budget, I think I can go up to around $70k due to savings and small scholarships and I should be taking a dual credit math, Iâm not sure which one yet because we havenât planned for my senior year yet
Use the net price calculator on each college website to check for affordability.
Admission that is too expensive = rejection.
Ok. I think you have time.
Go visit schools near home. Small mid, large, urban, rural. What do you like ? Find out. Your list has many variances.
Nothing wrong with a reach or two but for a Miami also look at U Tampa or Florida Tech. Iâd look at the latter. Or a Butler or Elon.
For Washington, how about Arizona or Arinaoma State. Harder to get to but Oregon State.
UT - Arkansas, Alabama, LSU or UTD, Houston, Texas Tech.
Rice - Tulsa, Trinity for a more realistic reach, Elon, UAH, U Denver
Colorado College is an LAC. Cornell in Iowa is similar in that it has one class at a time. But Trinity as a reach, Southwestern, Austin, Hendrix, Rhodes as a reach, Puget Sound, Willamette etc
Mines - there are Mines in South Dakota and New Mexico but Iâm thinking Tennessee Tech, Florida Tech, Louisiana Tech
SMU and TCU - Creighton, Loyola New Orleans, Belmont, Dayton, St Louis
But really go find what you like in a school so you can not pick a name but an environment that feels like home.
Once you determine that environment, we can help select schools to match.
The universities I listed would all be solid.
UTSA in particular would be great. If you can raise your score and bring your GPA up a bit you could try and see if youâd qualify for their Honors program.
Since youâre a junior, youâll have lots of choices!
You first need to figure out what your parents can afford- probably about 5k. Then assuming these federal programs continue, youâd get about 7k in federal grants and 5.5k in federal loans. Then you could get some merit scholarships, which will depend on your doing very well on the SAT or ACT. As a result, your best bets are likely in-state public universities. UNM also has good deals if you meet their criteria: 3.5 GPA and 23ACT (1130 SAT) OR 3.0 GPA & 26 ACT (1240 SAT) - would be similar or cheaper than instate TX.
Would you be willing to leave the Southwest if the net price were decent?
Can you run the NPC on
UTSA
UHouston
Texas Womenâs
University of New Mexico
Southwestern
Loyola New Orleans
Agnes Scott
Hendrix
You could apply EA to Agnes Scott and see whether it is affordable - with a 50k income youâd qualify for Pell grants (if they still exist), federal loans, and completing the Summit essays would likely add a lot of good scholarships.
You would need to have a solid score by July so you can use ApplyTX and apply as soon as the universitiesâ apps open.
In terms of courseload senior year, definitely take AP Calculus, AP CS Principles, Physics unless youâve already taken it (AP Physics1?) + an honors/AP social science if offered, honors English, perhaps Spanish 3 or PLTW.
Cornell IA is a terrific idea for a B+ student who likes Colorado College !
In terms of what I like environment wise, I donât have a preference. I want to feel comfortable with the academic aspect of school and not constantly be stressed out by work. Iâm aware that this is college and that it is inevitable, but Iâd like to prevent it as much as possible. Iâd like to stay in state with the exception of any schools in Washington, Colorado, and florida. My long term goal is to be a cybersecurity engineer so as long as the school can help me with attaining this job position
Did I miss - OP said $70k
Is that not per year ?
Op said that ^ AND ALSO, indeed, that she thinks her parents can afford 70k âwith savings and scholarshipsâ. I assumed she hadnât discussed budget with her parents yet because sheâs a junior. However itâs highly unlikely her parents have enough assets/savings to afford 70k/year on that income.
The very first college you need to identify is one where you have a VERY high chance of admission, that you like, that is affordable. Find two of those first. Then build your list UP from there.
I didnât see any sure things for admission on your first list. Please look for this. Folks here can give you some excellent suggestions!
How can you pay $70,000 for college if you have a family income of $50,000 a year. Please discuss college costs with your family.
Look at the post above from @MYOS1634 who gave some great suggestions for you. They thought you were a current senior but luckily you are not which gives you some time to research these suggestions.
You choose the wrong major for not being stressed.
So in state and then only Washington, Colorado, or Florida?
Thereâs W Washington, Washington State and some LACs.
Northern Colorado, Colorado State, Adams State for smaller.
U Tampa, Florida Tech, Stetson and then schools like FAU, UCG, FGCU, UNF, UWF.
Close to in state - good program. - C Arkansas.
Good luck.
Keep thise grades up.
Thank you so so so much and I will take this into consideration and make my list right away because I have so much anxiety about getting into college. Hopefully, this will help!
Nope. You have to resolve the budget.
You said $70k but the parents make $50k.
What can they afford per year?
Have that chat with them. Thatâs step 1,2, and 3.
$70k is $280k.
If they make $50k, itâs highly unlikely.
You canât go where you canât afford.
Colleges are businesses.
So you only want to apply where you can afford.
Talk to your family and come back to us.
No loans - what can they afford to pay each year.
Thanks
To create your college list, you need to find
- 2 colleges you like, are in the top 25% for (would definitely qualify for the Honors program) and, after running the NPC, know itâs affordable without parental loans.
- 3-5 colleges you like, are between the average and the top 25% for (can reasonably apply to Honors even though itâs a reach), and, after running the NPC, know itâs affordable without parental loans.
Once youâve identified these 5-7 colleges, you can add any college that you can afford even if thatâs a long shot. These would likely be âmeet needâ colleges like Rice(* ). Youâd likely be rejected from these 2-3 colleges but youâd know youâd tried.
(* Rice is highly unlikely, especially for CS which is the most competitive major right now.)
Texas here. With a 3.3 GPA, the list below is unrealistic, especially for computer science. OOS, even if you got in, thereâs no rational reason to spend triple the tuition on a degree thatâs as ridiculously employable as computer science.
If youâre into cyber security, UTSAâs cyber security degree is one of the top in the nation with a 100% job placement rate. In fact, they were one of the original pioneers of cybersecurity as a degree program, which turned San Antonio into the biggest cybersecurity hub next to the Pentagon. THAT would be a solid school to consider.
