Chances for UVa/Barnard

I am a rising sophmore at a public high school in Michigan noted for its academic excellence and number of students who go on to excellent schools-~100 go to U of Mich each year, ~25 to Ivy Leagues, etc. (Class size is about 500 and students are not ranked)

My school is 25% Asian and not to be stereotypical but therefore quite intense. MAny of my friends are already enrolled in ACT/SAT prep courses and have been thinking about colleges since middle school.

I am very interested in University of Virginia because I am a lagacy-my Dad went there. I visited it in 8th grade for a Washington DC trip and I fell in love with the campus. Additionally, it seems to be a school that offers a lot of oppurtunity and it is of course excellent in all fields.

I also love Barnard because it is small, personal, and all girls but has the opportunities of a large university. I also LOVE NYC; it is one of my favorite places in the world.

Here is my classes for this year, and what I expect to take throughout HS:
Grade 9 (Sem 1, sem 2)

Journalism-A+ (1 semester)

EC’s-Student Government rep, Kudos club officer, debate team, varsity golf team, 2 time junior golf champion at my country club, MUN, club med, student newspaper editor, youth council at church, plan to join NHS

I took the ACT as an 8th grader and scored a 27. i expect to improve to a score in the 30’s, and I also plan on doing classes and buying books to help me.

I am inolved in my church and plan to trael to Mexico on the mission trip next year and possibly years after that as well. I also regularely volunteer through them.

I volunteer at my public library, 2 hours a week.

I plan to either work as a caddy at a nearby country club or as a lifeguard next summer.

Like I said my top schools right now are UVa and Barnard. I also plan on applying to U Chicago, U of M, MSU, NYU, maybe Columbia.

Thanks for your input!

It’s really hard to say right now, without your SAT scores and such, but I’d say you have a good chance at UVA. Not sure if you knew this, or if its like this with most colleges, but you’re also considered an in-stater.

"Does being the child of an alumnus or alumna help my chances of getting in?

In general, yes. Any non-Virginian whose parent or step-parent earned a degree from the University of Virginia is considered a Virginian for the purposes of admission."

So you’d benefit from the same -much- more favorable view they show to all in-staters, plus the in-state tuition which is pretty decent for UVA’s caliber.

Best of luck, perhaps I will see you at UVA, for it is also one of my dream schools! : )

Thanks for replying!
I forgot to add that I am a white middle class female from Metro Detroit, MI.
Also, I am very interested in volunteering at a local hospital (you have to be 16 though so I am not old enough yet). I am also on the BP fashion board, somethng through Nordstrom.

BUmppp please reply!!
As a side note, Umich is absolutely a safety for me but it is also very likely I would attend.

In general all the women’s colleges provide an admission “bargain” … their acceptance rate tends to be higher than expected given the quality of the students and education due to the self-selection of the applicant pool.

The acceptance rate for both of these schools is around the lower 30% range.
