chances help!

hey guys,

the what are my chances forums suck and they only cater to genius people who are involved in everythign and have perfect SAT’s.

anyways im not perfect,

can someone check that out and tell me my chances of getting into tech?

im in state.

22 views and no replies?

personally, i would try to raise that 680 M to a 700+…and although your 590 is 10 points lower than the mid-50%, i still think it’s good enough if you do happen to get that 700+ in M (i have a 590 in V so maybe that’s why i’m saying this…iono)

this girl that goes to tech told me that the ppl at tech try really really hard to accept people that they think will do well. they don’t always go with how high your sat score is (although it certainly does play a big role) but i believe that one’s 4-year academic schedule is pretty much what helps them make up their mind…i could be wrong on this, but it’s what i believe…sorry if this wasn’t of much help…

I’d say you’d be competitive, your GPA is good and thats the most important factor.

What major are you declaring? That does play a role, the big departments with tons of students are going to be a bit more competitive although tech doesn’t say this out loud.

As far as the SAT goes it is what it is. If you took it again and got say a 700 it wouldn’t have that much weight. A 20 point difference in scores is normal and it won’t say really anything about your ability to take the test.

Tech’s stats can be found at the IRP website

http://www.irp.gatech.edu/Common_Da...n_Data_Set.html

They show SAT scores there too for entering freshmen. Your right in the middle for math and at the lower in for verbal, but hell its Tech I don’t think they weight that part too heavy.

Based on that I’d say your SAT score won’t really help or hurt you. Contrary to popular belief, the average SAT score is around 1350 or so (on the old scale, obviously) and I got in with a 1300.

What matters now is your course load and GPA. They want kids who have taken the hard classes because thats what you will be doing for the next four years. They lose lots of people who fail out or transfer and they want someone who knows what they’re getting in to and are ready academically and personally. Let them know that in the essay.

Just so you DO know what you’re getting into some prof from Duke put this site up a while back:

http://www.gradeinflation.com/

It shows average GPAs for various schools. Compare GT to schools like Princeton or Stanford. Its no walk in the park here.

BTW: I agree, these forums suck. I have to believe people embellish their stats on this because if not there is some serious grade inflation in schools. Not everyone has a damned 4.2 (I hate weighted grades) and a 1590. I got in to Tech four years ago with a lower SAT and slightly lower GPA than yours and am graduating this year with honors.

Good luck…

are you set on a major? I agree with GT06 look at some of the majors with less enrollment to up your chances. You are a female also so that should help you out.

Admissions based on major is a little hard and I wouldn’t know the best way to play it. I do believe that you get one free, no questions asked change of major up to a certain point.

I wish I could tell you better which programs are more competitive than others, I know ECE, CS, and ME are rather large.

Being a female will help as well, esp for engineering/CS.

awesome  thanks for your replies guys, esp gt06.

its too late for the SAT’s, and i applied already so i guess i just have to hope for the best :(

To PcEhAoCsE…

The difference between a 680 and a 700 is trivial. They both equally represent the student is very proficient in Math. Why even bother retaking it?

i guess you’re right…i think i’ve just been on this board for too long…

A couple months ago i talked to one of the admissions officers at Tech. We played this game where we got to see applications and guess who got in. I noticed that people with good GPAs like 3.8+ got in despite their lower SAT scores. They mainly look at GPAs, so dont stress too much.
