OOS with weighted GPA 3.83, a few AP courses. SATs total low 1800, but was deferred by SMU. My top choice is UT. I failed to get in EA at SMU so I now have to wait until regular action at SMU. Is UT harder to get in to? In previous years students from my school got in to UT and SMU but they all had weighted GPAs of 4.0 or greater. On the SMU threads many are saying that SMU increased the required GPA which resulted in more deferrals. Should this be a negative sign for my chances at UT??? I did get into Baylor.

UT is harder to get into than SMU especially if you’re OOS.

There is a statutory 10% cap on non-Texas admits to UT (to preserve citizen access to their public flagship). Because SMU is private, they don’t have to work within a set limit, e.g., this says 48% of the Class of 2010 came from outside Texas (and the top OOS feeder is your home state!).
Good luck!

So my chances are okay for SMU but it doesn’t look like my chances for UT (again, 1st choice) are as good. Does it depend on what major I applied to? I applied to Textiles and Liberal Arts as a 2nd major. I know students from the LA, Orange County, San Clemente and from last years threads it looks like San Diego County students that got in posted stats with weighted GPA above 4.0s. I got an acceptance letter from TCU last night.

If Baylor and TCU accepted me, doesn’t that help my chances with UT?

No, sorry.

UT is much harder to get into than SMU-- but being deferred is definitely not a no! I had several friends get deferred and get accepted in march! Good luck!

Hey I was deferred as well! SMU is my dream school and I would do anything to get in! Please if anyone knows how I could do this please let me know!

You can wait.

Baylor, TCU and SMU take anyone who has money to pay. In previous years they accepted kids from our school who financially fit, but academically had no chances not only at UT Austin, but also at A&M.
EA deferral at SMU was because they want to see FAFSA.

I’m amazed at who Baylor accepts. Have they actually turned down anyone?
