Hey, Thanks for stumbling upon this thread…I noticed all these students asking others to “chance” them, so I figured ‘why not?’

I’m a high school senior:

First Generation College Student / URM

GPA: 3.00 UW

SAT:
Verbal: 520
Math: 620
Writing: 640

ACT: 25

I am an IB student, haven taken over 12 advanced courses in my high-school career. My GPA is heavily affected by my early high school years, and has a drastic upper trend.

*School does not have a class rank

EC’s:

SCA President (School-wide President)

President of International Club

Member of Writing Club, Model United Nations, Environmental Club

Principal’s Advisory Council

I have stellar essays, teacher/counselor recommendations. I also received a personal letter of recommendation from the Principal of the school.

I have volunteered at:
an Indian International School as a instructor for language/ drama.
The American Red Cross Foundation

I work at a highly respected investment firm in DC as an intern (I have had the job since summer '09)

I had an amazing interview (it went really well).

your stats are below where they should be. GPA around 3.0 and below is pretty low (only about ~5% of the incoming student body has GPA in this range), and SAT CR+M is again at lower 25% and perhaps even below.

That said, you have ECs and activities that sound very interesting and outstanding. You are URM and first generation. Also, if you GPA improved drastically over the years, that should help a lot

Put together, these factors could very well compensate for the weakness in GPA/SAT. If I have to make a personal bet, I would say, you are in.

Three things you can do:

(1) If you think we can take another SAT in Jan and get a better score, do it and send it as a supplement

(2) show A LOT of interest in them, if it had not been made abundantly clear.

(3) don’t get senioritis. Continue to improve your GPA and continue to show outstanding progress in ECs that you are doing. Keep sending them updates on your continuing performance and achievement. This gives you a nice cover to keep “reminding” them how much you love AU. Also, this constantly puts you in front of your regional admission officer. Human nature is what it is: the more you stay on the front side of her radar screen, the better off you are. Remember that at AU, the regional admission officer more or less has the FINAL say on your admission.

Good luck. Sounds like you are a wonderful candidate who will go on to do great things in life.

lizmane, what do you mean exactly by showing a lot of interest in AU? I signed up for their mailing list, but besides that I’m not sure what else I should be doing to indicate interest.

In response to TotheSky, I asked this during the online chat and an admissions person said they track interest, i.e mailing list, if you visit/tour, do an interview and even attend a chat.

Its also realllyy good if you contact your admissions rep, ask about any questions or personal concerns you may have
