Chances in B school

Son has just expressed an interest in Pitt. Wants business major in college. Weighted gpa is about 3.8. One sitting of SAT with 1680, plans to take again and also ACT. All honors with 2 AP classes this year and planning 2-3 AP’s next year. Excellent EC’s with good leadership – class officer, BPA officer. Well rounded – musician, plays sports both with school (football, track) and independantly (snowboarder), involved in our church. Will have excellent recs. Part time job.

Looks like the Bschool must be very competitive with only 300 or so spots. Is he better off to apply A&S and try for econ. major and then MBA? He plans on MBA either way. Should he just consider the school a high reach and hope for the best. Luckily has several shcools of varying levels of difficulty to get into that he’s interested in.

Lastly, not familiar with rolling admissions. Is a student’s best shot for admission to get app. in early. If he is HS class of 2013, would that mean apply by early fall of 2012 or in the summer?
Thanks for your replies!

I’d say yes to trying for A&S if he doesn’t get his SATs up. They’re even low for A&S. No point making that decision until he sees how his scores improve though. Keep in mind that Pitt superscores.

Early, Early, Early!!! I think most will agree the earlier you apply, the better chances you’ll have of both getting in and getting scholarship money. If you can your high school to send your transcript early – in the summer or early September-- and get your application at the same time–that would be optimal!
