Chances in mid-Atlantic LACs

I am posting this on behalf of the son of one of my co-workers. A high school junior, the young man is in the top 25 percent (but not top 20 percent) of his graduating class at a nearby Catholic high school. He scored, I think, 610 on the mathematics part of the SATS and 630 on the verbal. I don’t know what is writing score is. He is very strong in English, history, and French. He is not so hot in mathematics and science. He has a 90 average. He is involved a a number of activities (student government, yearbook, drama), but isnt an officer in any of them

These are the schools that he is interested in

Allegheny

Dickinson

Gettysburg

Juniata

Villanova

Hampden-Sydney

Elon

Susquehanna

Wabash

Muhlenberg

Mount Union

Washington and Jefferson

Marietta

McDaniel

John Carroll

He is interested in studying history, political science, communications, English, with possibilities in French or sociology or psychology.

We are curious what is chances are in the above colleges. I know that members of this forum always have plenty to say. Any opinions would be welcome. Thank you

His best bets would probably be…Muhlenberg, Elon, Juniata, and Susquehanna. All four are great schools with growing reputations (that he’d have a good chance at getting into).

And if he’s interested in studying history, Gettysburg would be a good reach for him (amazing school - especially for those interested in American history).

He’d probably get into all those schools.HSC and Wabash are the only all men’s schools on the list.HSC is the most conservative of them.Political Science and History are very strong at HSC.
Nothing can take the place of visiting the schools while in session to observe the students and pick up the vibes at each place. Check oout HSC at
[Hampden-Sydney College, Virginia](http://www.hsc.edu)

altho i don’t know all these schools, i think he might have trouble with Villanova, Gettsyburg and Dickinson. he should be sure to check out each school’s individual website for details on their stats, as these schools are all different in terms of # applicants/selectivity, level of difficulty.
an SAT verbal of 630 doesn’t line up with being “strong in english”, so the rigor of the school may come into admissions’ consideration. what about APs or honors?

A few additional Catholic suggestions: Catholic University of America (DC), Mt. Saint Mary’s (MD) or St. Vincent ¶.

I hope he will get in. My son is a senior and he is applying to McDaniel, Susquehanna and Gettysburg of those on the list.

His GPA is only a little under 88, his scores are, best scores CR 590, Math 680 and writing 600.00 He has many sports and one really big community service of an adaptive skate program with disabled kids.

He comes from Maine, so he is a little out of the geographic area.

I see McDaniel as a safety and Susquehanna as a safety for him and Gettysburg as a huge reach.
