Chances? I've my heart set on here.

Asian American Female

GPA: 90 (The counselors told us a 92=4.0 at our school because of its “academic rigor.” I don’t know what that means.)

Course (the ones that “matter”):
AP US
AP Spanish
AP Macro (5)
Honors Journalism

Will take:
AP Government
AP Literature
AP Spanish Literature
AP Environmental Science
AP Statistics

SAT Score:

ECs (I’m only mentioning the ones that I feel are important to me):

Student Government
Tutoring Business
Intern at Grassroots Organization
Volunteer at Asian American Non Profit Organization
CTY
Spanish - 6 years
(I’m in the process of applying to the Telluride Program)

Recommendations:
I am on very good terms (for a lack of a better word we’re “BFFLS”) with my debate coach who is also teaches one of my classes. A lot of my teachers are very happy I’m choosing UChicago as my first choice and two have offered to write me a rec (AP US, Honors Journalism) without my request.

CHANCE: UChicago (EA)

My title was no lie. I am attracted to the school’s de facto motto “where fun comes to die.” I am interested in pursuing philosophy/econ major. I visited there and all the other visits I have done just don’t compare with the atmosphere I felt at UofC.

Thankss

Are you a junior? EA chances for this year are a bit late.

And besides, nobody can tell you your chances. You’re within the accepted range for everything.

tell us about the intern
and let us know about telluride

your chances aren’t bad. It really depends on your essays, and i assume your teacher recs will be glittering, which will definitely help you

Ah Telluride…those were the good times. Which seminar(s) are you looking at?

I don’t really give “chances.”

I just want to remind you that you’re going to need a rec from a math/science teacher and an English/history teacher.

Have you taken or are you going to take calculus?

I have not and will not take calculus. I started with the lowest math possible (poor decision on my part) and it never occurred to me in the eighth grade what the importance of Calc was.

The place where I intern I legitimately do care about. I don’t have a desk job primarily and I’m given a lot hands on opportunity. One of the projects I helped a lot in was this thing called Retail Action Project and we got a 1.5 million settlement for lost wages. I do a lot of Chinese/Spanish/English translation, I help people look for jobs, I go out and meet people, and I do a lot of writing/editing (the executive director asks me to proofread proposals). I also have secretarial duties including filing, picking up the phone, placating people, etc.

For TASP my first choice is: Human Rights, Cultural Rights & Economic Rights: Views from the “Global South" I’m not really enthused by the other ones but I hear they usually pick one for you from what they think is a good match for you.

It’s the math/science aspect that’s going to be hard because of the six math/science teachers I’ve had one left, one got fired, and one got fired and his teaching license revoked (yay magnet schools!).

Heh, sounds like you’re already assuming you’ll get into TASP…be careful. It was the reason I joined CC and it’s crazy-hard to get in – take it from a TASP reject who was accepted at UChi.

“It’s the math/science aspect that’s going to be hard because of the six math/science teachers I’ve had one left, one got fired, and one got fired and his teaching license revoked (yay magnet schools!).”

Ouch! Just do your best on this. Your can use the Journalism teacher’s rec as an additional rec. Best wishes on Telluride and TASP.

Yeah… I agree with ohio_mom but also keep in mind that the economics major at chicago is, to quote my advisor, just another name for a math major.
