Chances? Just for kicks...

Hey! So, I just applied to Tulane for Theatre, and since it’s one of my “safe-ish” schools, I thought I’d get an idea of my chances from you guys…I want to make sure I’m actually going to get in SOMEWHERE, haha!
I graduated as a junior (16 yrs old) because I was offered the opportunity to train with an Olympic equestrian in Virginia (I’m from Maine). The stable is very prestigious, and the program essentially the “Ivy League” of equestrianism, so it’s a big accomplishment. I worked up to 16 hrs a day, 5 and a half days a week there, and competed, etc.

School: Small, public, not-at-all competitive, in rural Maine. A very stifling atmosphere.
GPA: 3.6 or 3.7? I’m not sure.
Rank: 13/60, so top 25%. Ew…
SAT: 1980 - 710CR, 730W, 540M (yes, that’s REALLY BAD. Apparently I wasn’t on my game that day, but I’m retaking in Jan. Obviously the Jan score won’t be able to go to Tulane, but my other schools will get it)
SAT IIs: Lit 770, Bio 660
Ethnicity: Caucasian; permanent resident with English/German citizenship. I’ve lived in the US for 8 years.
Classes: As many APs and Honors as my school offered (read: almost none. Two APs, and Honors english classes.)
ECs:
-Theatre, all my life. Many leads in high school plays, and Secretary for my school’s drama club.
-Lifelong equestrian; trained with Olympian, competed in eventing, Appaloosa breed shows, hunters. Rescued, retrained, and resold a formerly abused horse. Worked as competition groom for several internationally ranked riders, and groomed at a national championship for the president of a breed organization. Will try out for Tulane Equestrian Team.
-Awards in art, and a small-scale commission business (except people kept wanting me to draw memorials for their deceased horses, and I felt so bad for them that I didn’t charge them…haha), also National Art Honor Society, and selected from student body to attend Haystack Mountain School of Arts workshop.
-Chorus
-I’m a vegetarian, and have logged lots of volunteer hours with several shelters and rescues, and hope to continue getting involved in that faction.
-French Club, all throughout high school. I want to study abroad in Paris.
-Chosen for Anatomy of Leadership, a group that involved all sorts of random seminars and field trips for “the leaders of tomorrow.” Haha :stuck_out_tongue:
-Published in Hunter & Sport Horse magazine, a national publication.
-National Merit semifinalist.
-In-school awards for Outstanding Achievement in French, English, and Drama
-Poetry published in several books
-Riding instructor/camp counselor/barn staff at a local stable
-Equestrian 4-H Treasurer, and horseback drill team member
-TONS of work experience (I fall into the <10k per year income bracket), including factory work (twelve hrs a day, seven days a week), supermarket cashier, typist, barn staff at multiple barns, writer for local newspaper
-Volunteered at local daycare, animal shelters, elementary school carnival, stable

Essay: Pretty good, IMO. I wrote a pretty funny essay about playing a tooth when I was five, and how I’ve grown up on the stage. I also had to submit an essay about why I graduated early, and that was well-written.
Recommendations should be good.
I know my rank/GPA aren’t amazing, but I went through a lot during high school - I wasn’t yet a legal immigrant and my mom was divorcing a citizen, so we were constantly threatened with deportation, and my little brother was ‘kidnapped’ by his father’s family, so I had to assume the role of the mother in my house for a while. Not fun stuff. Anyway, what do you reckon my chances are? Thanks so much!

Hi Ivy - Wow, I didn’t even know Tulane had an equestrian team, and I know a fair amount about Tulane, lol. Cool. Anyway, I think your chances are pretty good. I wouldn’t worry about the class rank too much, because the class is so small. Your GPA is good, and while your math score is low on the SAT, the others are fine. It adds up to the Tulane average for all 3 scores, a little low for just the CR,M. Should be OK. Especially given your back-story.

Tulane has a good theater program and an outstanding French program. Interestingly, Tulane used to be one of the top theater programs in the country some years ago (1950’s-early 70’s, I think) and some fairly well known actors attended. But the story is there was a big fight between the faculty and the dean and/or president at the time and they left en masse for Columbia or something like that. Just an aside, I know they have made strong efforts to have theater and dance be an important part of life at Tulane.

Good luck to you!
