Chances of a CA cc student getting into: Cal, UCLA, UCD, UCSD, USC

<p>I’m finishing up my second year at my community college in California, and I’m posting this simply out of curiosity and/or boredom. USC is kind of a stretch, I know; I figured since I was eligible for an application fee waiver I might as well apply.</p>

<p>GPA -
Transferable: 4.0
Cumulative: 3.898 (I’m taking 17 units this semester and figure I’ll have a little over a 3.9 if I get all As again. I got a B in a remedial math course, hence the difference in transferable and cumulative GPAs) </p>

<p>Random stuff -

  • Honors Program (due to applying to the program late, I will only have taken 4 honors classes)
  • Vice President of Service in Phi Theta Kappa
  • Vice President of the Anthropology Club
  • Letter of recommendation from my school counselor to USC (even though they’re not required) Will also try and get a letter of rec from a former teacher if I still have time.
  • Volunteer at the local elementary school a couple hours a week
  • Volunteer in my school’s anthropology museum a couple hours a week
  • Applied as an anthropology major to all schools</p>

<p>So there you have it. Volunteer hours are definitely not where I would like them to be, but they show I’m committed to at least a few different ‘causes’. No need for SAT/ACT stats since none of the schools require them, and I don’t have any “awards” besides a Pinnacle Award for Phi Theta Kappa (community colleges don’t really offer many awards like one would see in high school).</p>

<p>I also have all my lower-division courses completed (with an A in each of them) and my IGETC requirements will be complete after this current semester.</p>

<p>“Congratulations! Because of your outstanding academic record, you have been selected to compete for the UCLA Regents Scholarship for the 2011-12 academic year.”</p>

<p>I’ll take that as a good sign?</p>

<p>With your qualifications, I will say you are in pretty good shape for all these schools. USC isn’t much harder than UCLA, and your GPA (unweighted 3.898?) seems good. I’m not 100% sure concerning cc transfers, but I think you have a very good shot.

UCLA - low reach?
UCD - low reach?
UCSD–match/low reach.
USC - low reach.</p>

<p>My son is a cc transfer student too. I can tell, you have a very good chance for all your choices. Plus to be selected for the Regents Scholarship is a very good sign. Good luck to you!</p>

<p>“and your GPA (unweighted 3.898?) seems good.” - transferable GPA and cumulative GPA (in community college terms) are not referring to a weighted or unweighted GPA. Transferable simply means all classes taken that transfer to a four-year institution (i.e. the UCs), and cumulative is my GPA as a whole, including classes that don’t transfer (i.e. my remedial math course, which I did not have to report on my UC applications).</p>
