I know you all can’t see my portfolio, which is a HUGE component of the application, but was just wondering some raw idea of whether I’d be accepted into Tisch acting.

Also, do you all think it’s a disadvantage to apply for straight theatre? For example, say someone who applied for MT wasn’t accepted there but was being considered for one of the acting studios against me, who applied for straight theatre. Will they take the MT person because they have “more skills”?

Musical theater, to my knowledge, is not in Tisch, it’s in Steinhardt - which means it’s a completely different application pool applying to a completely different school.

Drama at Tisch is more highly regarded than musical theater at Steinhardt - for the most part, everyone famous you see, even those who are on/off of Broadway, studied at Tisch not Steinhardt.

So no, they won’t take an MT person over you because you are NOT competing against one another. They are entirely different schools/programs/applications.

Are you academically qualified? Sure.

Can anyone say you have a chance of getting in or not? No. It’s impossible for anyone on CC to guess because we don’t know your portfolio. Additionally, Tisch is one of the most selective acting schools in the US.

You will have more responses, and from posters who are either students in Tisch or parents or alum and will receive more accurate info. If you post on the drama major and MT forums. Tisch and Steinhardt do both have MT- each with their own focus. You mention a “portfolio” - but are you applying to the design and production studio? If not, you will need to focus on preparing your audition- not a portfolio. That’s an entirely different animal. There is a CC forum for both Tisch and Steinhardt Musical Theatre, as well as a DRAMA Major forum and you’ll have better luck there. Your academic stats are great for both programs. It will come down to whether they feel your acting skills and/or voice are what they may need in a particular year and so on. It is an exciting but somewhat stressful endeavor- it’s wonderful you are researching programs now. Cast a wide net and closely examine the curriculum and focus of the program to make sure it matches your ultimate goals. NYU says that the talent portio. Counts for 50% of the decision. Admissions can outvote Tisch if they feel very strongly tho i think they do try to honor candidates the department strongly wants, but if Tisch doesn’t feel you are the right fit, it won’t matter what your academic stats are. Same for Steinhardt. If your heart is set on NYU, you will have the option to also indicate that you’d accept placement in the LSP but I do not think you can transfer into performing arts from there junior year- while you could transfer into CAS as I understand it.

I wasn’t aware of the Steinhardt differentiation for MT majors. However, I do know that if an applicant isn’t accepted to MT they are automatically considered for any other studio within Tisch, so there is a possibility we could be competing for the same slot. Thanks for the info though, I’ll check out Steinhardt.

Broadway baby- I’m not sure I follow what you mean by competing for the same spots. Applicants are to either Steinhardt or Tisch- not both. Each has MT but they have their own focus. Yes, closer examination of each college will help. And, I may be wrong, but Tisch applicants are asked if they wish to be considered for all studios or only MT- I don’t think it’s automatic. You indicate that either at your audition or on a document ahead of time.

Lightning Mom- I am sorry if I was confusing in my responses. I am looking into Steinhardt but, as the title of my post indicates, I am primarily interested in Tisch. Tisch is the school where, if not accepted into the MT studio, you can still be accepted into other ones.
