I have spent years counseling high school students about admissions, but this is a completely new case for me: I have a sophomore who was home schooled via an online school who is applying for admissions to relatively prestigious schools right now. I have advised her that applying as a sophomore is incredibly unusual and it would be best for her to attend relatively cheap community college courses before applying to college; she will be short-changing her dreams of Harvard by applying now. What worries me in particular is that she hasn’t taken any AP/IB courses and is just now taking “honors” courses from her online school. These courses don’t strike me as being rigorous since she doesn’t seem to recollect a lot of standard math. I am still trying to get a read on her what her SAT score will be. She is nevertheless very bright and has very strong reading/writing skills. That said, does she have a shot at all? Are there schools (outside of Simons Rock) that are particularly friendly to such candidates? I would appreciate any advice about the odds for acceptance!
She has yet to graduate from the online high school and she is applying to college as a transfer student? Please explain.
She will have officially graduated her online high school by summer 2019 and is applying to colleges this fall.
