Chances of being accepted into Yale.

Hello,
My dream vision for my life would be to get accepted into Yale University’s Technical Theater Program. I feel very strongly about pursing Technical Theater Production in the category of stage design, stage management, or directing. While I do not know the specific jobs that I would wish to have, possibilities include; Disney Theatrical, Disney resorts, Broadway, Sound and Sights theaters, and eventually working at a church as the Technical Director of Production. What I want to do with my life is a niche; with very few colleges that offer this specific degree I am starting at the top of the list with Yale. Here is a bit about me. Let me first start by saying I am in no way expecting to get into Yale as a freshman, I know I will have to attend a University to prove my worth, but this is where I am now.

Again I do not expect to be accepted into Yale at first, but plan on attending a local Community College for a year to prove my grades.

I am looking for help for where to go next, are there any other schools that offer a degree in Technical Production that might fit me? Is Yale a bit to prestigious for me? Looking for honest thoughts and feedback.

Thanks so much!

It depends on how you do in your Community College

Applying directly to yale will probably result in a rejection. However, if you do go to a community college and do well, I believe you would have a decent shot with a transfer to Yale.

Are my extra curricular and experience where they should be? I can also apply to Purdue University here in my home town for my first year as well.

I think the other commenters are being too nice. Even with a year of As at a community college, being in the bottom of your HS class and having a ACT of 24 is likely to prevent you from getting accepted into a highly selective college. It is good that your ECs are so closely linked to your proposed degree and career plans.

Strictly theoretically speaking, what if I earned As at Purdue University?

Your academics are pretty bad for Yale standards, but everything else is really amazing. Honestly I think you will have a hard time with Yale considering your class rank and gpa. Good luck though!

Also when you used the wrong verion of “to” in the last line doesn’t help your chances.

It appears that Purdue has a major in theater production and design. If that is your local school, then perhaps you can start there and then try to transfer to an even better program. Assuming you are a high school senior, are you trying to get straight As this year? Your plan either at community college or Purdue involves going from a 2.5 high school GPA to straight As in the first semester of college – if there is a A student hiding inside of you, the time to come out is now.

You are not going to get into Yale. Your numbers will get your app thrown out at first glance.

Your chances of being accepted to Yale are nearly zero. Your chances of being accepted as a transfer after going to Purdue or community college (with all As or not) are slightly lower. The admissions standards for transfer are higher than straight out of high school, because there are very few spots.

Also worth noting - though you may already know this - the Yale School of Drama is a graduate school. As an undergraduate, you can certainly major in Theater Studies, but you’d be getting a liberal arts bachelor’s degree from Yale College, with the usual distribution requirements and all that. The coursework required of Theater Studies majors focuses pretty heavily on literature and the like. It’s not like you’d be taking lots and lots of technical theater courses as a Yale undergrad. On the other hand, as a Yale undergrad you could get useful experience by participating in extracurricular theater productions, as I’m pretty sure the ratio of people who want to perform is always skewed in relation to the people who want to do technical stuff. Of course, that’s true at other colleges as well.

Looking back at your original post (and harping on what I said in the second paragraph above), I see that you mention there are “very few colleges that offer this specific degree.” Without knowing exactly what you mean by “this specific degree,” I suspect that Yale isn’t one of the colleges that offers it to undergraduates. You can get a BA with a major in Theater Studies at Yale, but you can do that at hundreds of other colleges as well.

If you’re talking about the Yale School of Drama, that’s a whole other situation. There you can do very focused study, aimed at a professional career, in various sub-areas related to theater, such as set and lighting, sound design, and stage management. But you’re going to have to get an undergraduate degree first.

Okay seriously you have asked for MY opinion. I say this because I care and I feel pretty confident about it. Do. NOT. go. to. Yale! it is $50,000 a year to attend. With your experience as a sound producer and working with the Disney Institute you might just try to get a start in the field. Your job at the frozen yogurt shop will help you CONSIDERABLY because there are some who don’t get work experience until they are done with school. Find a great public not-for-profit school. (I mean it if you pick Full Sail, Kaplan, or another ivy league I’m going to cry). :)>- Ivy League colleges have their place. They are good for people wishing to be professors; people in the fields of English and Math tend to find relative success by going this route. For your case, majoring in theater, I would say don’t bother. Now, I don’t know for sure but I have a strong suspicion that you may be flat-out rejected simply because of your GPA.

Well, I have a close friend at Yale that is an assistant Dean, and my youngest is currently a freshmen. That said, while they do accept junior college transfers, and they (jc transfers) actually acclimate well and do well once on campus–you will have to do extremely well in the next couple of years. So, just as side-board for qualification, my daughter had, I think 2120 SAT(with a high score of 770 in math) a 4.3 GPA, number 2 in her class of 450 in HS, finalist in the state x-country, URM (native), strong interest in STEM, and delineated ties to her ancestral community. Even with admission, she was on the “low-end” of accepted scores, so while two of her SAT scores ranked in the 98th percentile, they were by IVY standards rather unremarkable. I think, and I am just assuming, for a native female, interested in STEM, her scores were quite rare overall to that population, so I think that provided a real plus…but, best and good luck to you.

I doubt YSD cares much about HS GPAs or SAT scores.

Yes, I was referring to college.
