Chances of CEE Ph.D. admission with RA?

Hello all,

I’m currently an M.S. Civil Engineering grad student at WPI. I’ve just completed the application process to 6 mid-level Ph.D. programs in Civil Engineering to UMass-Amherst, U. of Rhode Island, Northeastern University, U. of New Hampshire, Polytechnic NYU, and Tufts. I’ve been in contact with several Professors from these schools, and I’ve went to visit and meet professors at UMass, U. of New Hampshire, and Northeastern. Now all I can do is wait.

My question is what do you think my chances are for admission with an RA offer to those schools?

A brief summary of my credentials is as follows:

B.S. Civil Engineering from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology with 3.36/4.00 last two years GPA

I’ll complete my M.S. Civil Engineering from WPI in one and a half years instead of 2 years bc I completed my thesis during the first year, 3.71/4.00 cumulative graduate GPA

Worked as a Research Assistant during first year at WPI conducting sponsored research, submitted a conference paper

Five summers worth of internship experience at structural engineering firms

Strong letters of rec. from graduate professors including my research advisors

My only concern is with my GRE scores. I took them twice, scoring 440V/650Q the first time, and 440V/590Q the second time. Notice I scored lower on the quant. the second time! I hope this doesn’t kill my chances…!

So what do you think my chances are?

Thanks

Man… That Q GRE is not so good for Engineering… Especially if you did twice! I would retake it again soon, studying a little bit some techniques you can improve it at least to 700 (GRE is very important for assistantship).

I realize that my quant scores are pretty low for engineering…i’m hoping that my other credentials i.e. research experience will help to make up for the low scores. Does anyone know how admissions councils will interpret multiple GRE scores, esp. if I got a lower quant score the second time?
