Slight reach. If your sophomore grades were they only year you had a GPA below 3.5, then your chances are greatly improved. Your ACT is also a bit low. Your class rank though is pretty good and so is your course rigor. I’d say if you apply early and have your counselor explain your health concerns, you should have an ok shot.

Good luck!

Actually I think your chances are better than a slight reach, especially if your in-state. I think your ACT score is around the average range for admitted students, and your weighted GPA is also between the average ( though your unweighted is below). I also had a health condition throughout my high school years, though began to notice it mainly in 11th grade and started to have appointments… though now over the summer I’m recovering, and hopefully fully recovered by September. I plan to explain my health condition if given the chance, I think you should do it as well. If your in-state I think your chances are about decent.

His GPA is NOT in the average. MSU uses unweighted grades. The average GPA is about 3.4-3.7 right now.

His ACT score is in range, but towards the lower end. The thing he really has going for him (or her, sorry if your a girl lol) is that the illness deeply impacted grades and that his class rank is pretty high.

Thank you for the replies, I really appreciate it. I know my GPA is on the lower end and I wish I could take back that sophomore year lol but I’m aware i can’t do that. I can only learn from my mistakes and move forward. I heard they look at grade trends, and I have to say that after my sophomore I really stepped it up with the grades, basically averging A’s and a few B+'s throughout the year (including AP). Do you think they will take this into consideration and see my sophomore year as a fluke? Not saying that they will ignore it, but know that I have alot more potential. Also, does it help that I am a latino ( Puerto Rican )?

MSU is really good at hearing explanations. I had a 3.8ish all through school but had operations junior year for intestinal problems and my GPA was a 3.0 that year, I think. Either way, I emailed them and asked and they said that will overlook the grades if the rest of your academic record is strong.

Hispanic will help a little, but not much. I mean, it certainly won’t hurt you but it won’t put you in either.

Since you had As and Bs the rest of your schooling, you have a pretty good shot. Like I said, have your counselor write a note about what happened. Being sick is NOT a mistake, it’s unavoidable. Good luck, I hope you go there!

One more question: what kind of major are you looking at?

I’d say you have a decent chance of being accepted. Although your GPA is a bit lower as mentioned and your ACT is average for the university, you do have strong EC’s, your minority status might help you minutely, and your courseload is pretty strong in itself. Definitely mention your sophomore year heart condition - something with that big of an effect on your life should be taken into consideration (and not held against you).

How much does it help (hurt) to have a parent that attended MSU?

also, are there certain majors that are easier to get accepted into?

Your major doesn’t affect your admission. You are first accepted into the university, and then, if your major has a specific admissions process like James Madison or RCAH, your app is sent to them.

Legacy does help, but I doubt much. None of us can say for certain how much of a boost it gives your app.

you’ll be fine. i know of a lot of people who go in with the same stats. it would definitely help to pull your GPA up a little but i think you’ll get in regardless.

I think its a slight reach, your GPA is kinda lowish.

Also, maybe explain your circumstances in your essay?

They might look at senior year first semester grades but you should get in
