Chances of getting in to UNC and NC State (2018)

Hey everybody,

I’m a rising senior this year and am curious about my chances of getting in to UNC.

IN STATE

Academics:
-4.59 weighted gpa
-3.79 unweighted gpa
-Top 10% class rank
-29 ACT (retaking one more time - hope to get a better score)
-6 AP classes with mostly honors classes

AP Test Scores: (3) APES (4) AP Lang (5) Psychology

ECs:
-Varsity Diver 9-10 grade
-Varsity Tennis 9-12 grade
-National Honor Society 11-12 grade
-National Latin Honor Society (I’m the historian) 11-12 grade

Jobs:
-Head of pool logistics and concessions management 9-11 grade
-Head tennis coach at neighborhood pool 9-12 grade

Accolades:
-13th place finisher at high school regional diving competition
-State 2nd place metal for advanced prose sight reading in Latin
-Cum laude on National Latin Exam

I’m applying for a psychology major and minor in classics (Latin and Greek).

Your chances look OK for UNC and very solid for NCSU. Being in state is a big advantage for UNC but acceptance will hinge on your application (my opinion only).

For UNC - Grades are acceptable (minimum of about 4.5 weighted), 78% of incoming class are in the top 10% of their high school class. Your ACT is about in the 35th percentile (mid 50% = 28-33). ECs look good with leadership and good honors. The key for UNC will be in your essays and how well you sell yourself as being a fit for Carolina. Make sure they are well written, of course, but also be creative. If you have a compelling personal story, use it.

For NCSU - Grades are slightly above the average incoming student (4.53). 52% of incoming class are in the top 10% of their high school class. Your ACT is about also at the 50th percentile (28.9 incoming avg.). Last time I looked, NCSU is numbers driven and I don’t think they ask for essays.

As a side note, my DD had stats similar to yours. A bit higher GPA, lower standard test scores. She graduated from UNC with “Distinction” as an undergraduate and just completed her Master’s at UNC. Best of luck to you!!
