Chances of getting in?

I’d just like to start this post off by stating that the school I go to is one of the best in math scores, if not overall, in the state of Massachusetts, just in case this is relevant info. (749 math 2 SAT’s as an average in my class).

I’m Chinese, and I am applying to Stern. I plan on majoring in finance. Here’s a bit more info about myself.

My GPA is a 3.4/5.0 weighted, 3.2 unweighted

-On the SAT II Math 2, I got a 760.

-On SATs reasoning, I got a 1950 (730 math, 620 CR, 600 writing. Retook this yesterday, will be much better, hopefully 2100-2200. The last time I took them, I was very sick and unable to focus.)

-As for ECs, I spend about 12-15 hours a week participating in the school band and other band-related events, and I am on a club swim team as well as the high school swim team, spending about 15 hours for either a week, for the entire year except for a month during the summer. I’m also a captain this year on the high school team. For band, I spend the entire school year participating, as well as 5 days during the summer, 12 hours a day.

-in past years, I’ve been taking all classes with a max GPA of 4.5, and this year I am taking AB Calculus and AP enviro, both of which are honors (max 5.0). Also, my school does not do school rank, but I am in the top 1/2 of my class.

-I didn’t really try hard until the end of my junior year. I never studied for any of my tests and just scraped by with B’s, but this year has been different and I’ve been getting 87ish or higher on all my tests, thought I’m not sure if this changes my chances of getting in at all.

Lastly, I am applying ED, and I’ve been talking with the swim coach there, and I am hopefully a candidate to join the team. Is it possible that I could get in? I am aware my GPA is dreadfully low, especially for a school for NYU, but if you count a stellar essay and supplements, along with swimming recruitment, is it possible I could get in?

Thanks for your time, I realize this is really long :p

3.2/4.0 UW? Or 3.2/5.0 UW? Either way, your GPA is VERY low for Stern. Stern applicants typically have a 3.7 or higher. At least a 2100 SAT, usually higher is recommended to be considered a strong applicant. Stern usually looks for candidates within the top 25% of the class.

With your current GPA and SAT scores, I would say that you don’t really have a chance.

If say I got a 21/2200 which is what I imagine I am getting, would that help? In addition, does the swimming even count at all?

I believe NYU works in the following way:
(1) You have to be accepted to NYU based on your academics
(2) Then you can be considered for the team.

I don’t believe NYU gives extra merits to potential sports team candidates, as we aren’t really a very large ‘sports school’.

The ED will help, but since Stern is very competitive, I would definitely try to get 2100+ on the SATs. If you haven’t already done a retake for the SAT, I’m not sure that doing one now would be early enough to apply ED I round.

I’ve already taken it, hoping for 2100+ easy. Are you sure there’s no preference for an athlete a coach really wants?

It depends, you would know if you were recruited. Are you a national level athlete?

No, but NYU doesn’t seem to recruit those kinds of swimmers i.e none of the incoming freshmen were something such as junior national qualifiers…

Sorry for bumping this topic, but I’d like some extra feedback on my app. I’ve retaken SATs, and got 780 math, 640 CR, 650 W for a 2070.
The swim coach was even on the phone with me when he filled out the form that said “we want this guy, here are some stats.”. Those stats include my Q1 grades, which are going to be ~3.9W. Also, I have about 30 hours of ECs a week. I am now applying to CAS for Econ/Comp sci, do I stand a chance? Percentages would be most beneficial.

Your SAT scores are now on-par (2000+)

Your Q1 grades are good.

Your UW GPA is still hurting you.

However, given your Q1 grades and improved SAT scores, your chances have gone drastically up.

I understand that I’m clearly not the ideal applicant, but am I maybe a 50/50 at this point? Numbers help my confidence as opposed to general ups and downs if that makes sense.

At CAS, yes, 50%.

I applied ED to CAS- major in Linguistics, do you think I can get in?

GPA- 3.8 weighted and unweighted
ACT- 30 (34 English, 30 Math, 32 Science, 25 Reading, 31 Writing)
class rank-12 of 208 (puts me in the top 10)

I was an exchange student in Sweden my Junior year, thus my reading score is really low because I still have trouble reading English.

I speak Swedish and French fluently and study spanish at school

I am an AFS volunteer and Returnee Mentor, and have hosted exchange students

I take AP, honors, and college classes, I’ll have 9 foreign language credits at the end of this year.

I did a language immersion summer camp at MMLA for French and have taken private French lessons for 2 years

I am in Spanish National Honors Society and a lot of other clubs like the Knitting Society, Key Club, Debate Team, etc.

I row varsity Crew and run varsity Cross Country and am the captain of both of those.

What do you think? Can I get in?
