AP Psych (2015): 5

Desired concentration: major in anthropology (paleoanth?)and minor in women’s studies.

Issues?: switched schools between 9th and 10th grade. Middle class income, divorced parents. Eight people in whole family (step family included), five to be in college at my time of uni. Suffering from clinical depression, anxiety, eating disorders that have greatly affected my health. Hour commute to school. Mother unemployed (one whom I live with)

Other: I had an interview at Yale and I think it went well. I expressed my passion for feminism and archaeology, and how I want to integrate both. That, if I attend Yale, I will make a feminist club that advocates equality for women in the Global south, and holds fundraisers.

Any thoughts, or questions will be appreciated. I’m applying this fall to Yale, Brown, Uni of Cincinnati, Uni of Chicago, Uni of Pennsylvania, Miami University in Oxford, McGill University, and George Washington University.

Your stats are great! I think that if you aren’t planning to take the SAT then you should take some SAT Subject tests just to be safe. If you emphasize your passion for feminism then you’ll stand out in applications. Yale, Brown, and UChicago are reaches… like they are for everyone else who applies lol. Everything else is a low/high match.
Please chance me back!

Thank you!

You sound like a really amazing candidate! However, if I were you I would not put down on you EC list those college prep programs unless you were given a full ride there because colleges are quite aware that you have to pay for some and they kind of see that as “privileges”. Also, not only do you seem privileged but your EC’s are… well, not focused on one specific area. Your passion is not shown, and many admission officers find it unbelievable that you can balance so many clubs and ec, not saying you can’t, but that is what they will probably be thinking. You seem privileged, but who cares you are awesome and will do well!! good luck!

PS: I am in a program that helps me with college that is for people who are low income and that is where my info/advice is coming from.

Thank you, the “brand” that I am trying to convey is my deep passion for Women’s Issues and Anthroology (although I wish to pursue anthropology in my career). I appreciate your feedback- I didn’t think about taking some superfluous one sour, but thank you  you may have just saved me

Sorry, I don’t think I’m exactly qualified to chance you, but I just want to compliment you on your extracurriculars! I love that you are so involved with female empowerment. I think that kind of focus will definitely set you apart in applications. Plus, you totally make me want to start a feminism club at my school too! Good luck with applications!

Bless you <3

I disagree with the suggestion to not include your summer anthropology/archeology programs. Paid programs aren’t nearly as impressive as competitive/funded ones, but in your case the programs relate to your major interest and show sustained effort. Doing 2 summers of these also shows more than just a token interedt. There are affluent kids who do expensive summer programs with little commitment or effort, but I think you will come across quite differently.

Thank you!
My counselor said at school that ethically, admissions officers can’t know what the financial situation.

Although they don’t know that I had financial help, they don’t know that I didn’t either. So… It can’t hurt?

Besides, they give out scholarships for these programs all the time
