Chances of Getting into McGill [international for Canada, 4.0 GPA in IB program, proficient in French]

I am a US citizen(in Indiana) and McGill has become a bit of a dream school. I’ve already submitted my application but have no idea of my chances. I was a full IB student first in my class, 4.0 unweighted and 4.367 weighted. I went test-optional for the sat, and did not submit IB scores. I’m a straight student and in IB I took Math AA HL, Bio HL, Chem SL, Environmental Systems and Societies and Societies, English HL, French SL, and History of the Americas HL. I am, according to the department of education, proficient in French, as well as being fluent in English. If accepted I would commit to McGill but scrolling through reddit still hasn’t given me a good sense of my chances. What are my odds?

Hope you have some solid backups. None of us can tell you if you’re getting into McGill but you’re a wonderful student and no matter where you go, you’re going to soar!

I think that your chances are very good. I do not think that I would quite call it a safety (I considered it a safety decades ago with stats a bit lower than yours, but I was in-province). I think that you should therefore make sure that you have applications in at other schools, including at least one safety. As one possible alternative, there is still time to get an application in at Concordia University, which is just up the street from McGill.

At least in our experience the timing in terms of when you get your acceptances back can vary quite a bit at universities in Canada. Mostly I have learned to pretty much conclude nothing at all from the timing.

It is still pretty early in the process. I would actually be a bit surprised to hear back this early for anyone except for maybe (and maybe not) very academically strong in-province students.

But based on what you have said, if I had to guess, I would guess that you are very likely to be studying at McGill in September. Bonne Chance!

What program did you apply to at McGill?

If you applied to Arts, I think McGill should be a safety with a 4.0 unweighted GPA.

If you didn’t apply to Arts, I think it’s still very likely that a 4.0 would earn you a place in another program such as science or engineering (as long as you have all the prerequisite coursework), but I don’t know for sure.

I applied to their Bachelors in Art and Science and the Bachelors in Agriculture and Environmental Science

For Arts & Science, I think it’s very likely that you will be admitted with your 4.0 unweighted, unless this year’s applicant pool is much stronger than last year. Last year’s minimum was 3.7 unweighted and A- in each prerequisite.

Agricultural & Environmental Science should be a safety (unless there’s some error in your application that would disqualify you). Last year’s minimum was 3.0 unweighted and B in each prerequisite. Although these minimum requirements fluctuate from year to year, I can’t imagine that it would rise by a whole grade.

McGill lists the prior year’s minimum requirements on this page, under the “Admission Requirements” menu item: Requirements for U.S. applicants | Undergraduate Admissions - McGill University

I’ve gotten into Purdue’s honors college(early action) with a decent amount of scholarships money-so I have my plan if I don’t get accepted
