Chances of getting into NYU/Tisch Film Program?

<p>I was a bit of a slacker in high school. I moved onto college and am currently sitting at 3.67 GPA and have made the Dean’s List for both of my freshman semesters.</p>

<p>COURSES
I have taken general classes and most of them were considered the more or less “rigorous,” courses that a freshman is able to take. This includes-
-English (the highest available)
-Basic Algebra (the middle course- “flex-paced,” technically considered remedial)
-Basic Communications (a mandatory course for advancement)
-Theatre (the highest available)
-Art History (Area III, which means a senior would be expected to take this)
-Interpersonal Communications
-Psychology (a mandatory course for advancement)
-Sociology (a mandatory course for advancement)
*All of the above, I recieved a A in, except Psychology and Basic Com. which I recieved a B</p>

<p>EXTRA CIRCULARS
-A summer internship at my local TV/News Station (counts as college credit)
-Secondary camera operator/primary boom operator on independent film project
-Animal rights activist group (president and founder), affiliated w/ peta2.com
-Film club (an officer- marketing)
*All of the above are college only extra’s. High school seems irrelevant. </p>

<p>PLANS

  1. I am currently in the process of acquiring a camera (looking at a cannon), a Macbook Pro (for editing), and editing software (final cut pro/adobe suite 5), so that I can work on my own projects.
  2. 4.0 GPA Sophmore year, deans list of course
  3. More involvement in local film projects
  4. Film or some media internship in New York City next summer
  5. Finishing my sophomore year, for transfer in my junior year
  6. Taking Film Studies, Media Criticism, and another Math course. Anything else I should take next semester? What type of classes should I be taking? </p>

<p>OTHER INFORMATION
- SAT SCORE: 1520. I’ll list specifics if anyone wants to know.</p>

<p>FACT OR FICTION?

  1. NYU/Tisch likes storytellers? So I should opt to send a screenplay/script as opposed to film reel? This wont be a problem because I am a good storyteller.
  2. The average SAT score for admitted Tisch students is a 1300? Which would mean I would not need to retake my SATS?
  3. There comes a point when NYU/Tisch no longer cares about an applicants high school transcript after taking _____ number of college credits? Anyone know if this is true? And what the number is?
  4. Tisch does not like a “laundry list,” of extra-ciriculars? Should I be involved in more, less, or stick with what I have? </p>

<p>I am starting my freshman year at Tisch, majoring in Film/Television, this September. So while I may not exactly be “in the know”, and while I definitely don’t know what Tisch’s demands are in terms of transfer applicants, I will merely tell you what I could gather from my own application process.</p>

<p>The most important thing to emphasize is that Tisch do not require any prior experience in film from applicants to the film/television major. Rather, they are interested in creative people in general. If you have any other artistic outlets other than film, make sure you emphasize those, and list them on your “creative resume” list. Sending a film as your portfolio submission is definitely NOT a must - they look equally at any other artistic medium you send them. Personally, I sent a series of 10 still photographs, and got in. You need to decide what creative outlet best showcases your talents, and if you think that the best way is through a short story or screenplay, then by all means, send that! However, if you feel that your film work is your strongest point, send in a film reel! It all depends on what you feel showcases your artistic talents most.</p>

<p>Ultimately, the most important thing Tisch look for other than creativity is originality and uniqueness. They can teach you HOW to tell stories, but they are definitely looking for people who have interesting stories to tell. In your essays and your creative submission, look for things in your life that set you apart from all the other applicants, and emphasize those. The same applies for the “laundry list” of activities: from what I could gather, Tisch is far less interested in how many things you did, but rather, what they were, and what your level of involvement was. Again, these are all just more elements that can help you emphasize your uniqueness and individuality. That said, remember that you are applying to NYU itself as well as Tisch, and that like any university, they definitely want to see some of the standard extra-curricular stuff. Emphasize the things you did in college and you’ll be fine.</p>

<p>In terms of grades: Your college transcripts seem great. Now I’m not sure about this, but I think that transfer applicants need to send in their high school transcripts as well, so you should look into that if you think you might have a problem. I do not know the answer to your third question (whether or not Tisch stop looking at high school transcripts after X years in college), but hopefully, someone else around here will be able to help you out.</p>

<p>Is your SAT score out of 2400 (including writing) or 1600 (only math/reading?) Because if you have 1520 out of 1600, then you are in very good shape and have nothing to worry about.</p>

<p>A little bit off topic- but on the note of your photograph submissions- where they actual photographs or photographs of works you’ve done in illustration/sculpting?</p>

<p>I’m pretty sure the OP has a 1520/2400 considering nobody with a 1520/1600 seriously asks if they need to retake the SAT. That being the case, yes, you do need to retake the SAT. The 1300 score is referring to a combined Math and Critical Reading score. You’d also be well-advised to ignore whatever lunatic is telling you that NYU doesn’t like their applicants to take many ECs.</p>

<p>I’m an incoming Tisch film student and really only had one big extracurricular and a few smaller ones (I attended two high schools… weird situation but one was an academic school and one was an arts school where I studied film and I’d go to both every day).</p>

<p>I think it’s more important to show deep involvement in one or two activities than simply list a bunch of things and have it be anybody’s guess whether you were involved deeply or not.</p>

<p>I meant that the OP will not be penalized for being involved in many activities unless he/she’s clearly dabbling in each without any commitment.</p>

<p>Regarding #3, NYU doesn’t care much about your SATs/HS if you apply as a junior. HOWEVER, I applied for spring 2008 (making me a upper sophomore) and I got into NYU with SATs lower than a 1300. The further away you get from freshman year, the less that NYU looks at your HS stats. As a transfer, don’t bother taking the SATs again, they really will not make or break you either way. You are better off putting the effort towards your portfolio and essays.</p>

<p>Another question I wanted to ask was will NYU take into account that I am a public college vs. a private college. Or does this even make a difference? By public I dont mean community. It’s a state college w/ bachelors, masters, etc. </p>

<p>I am most definatley not sending a film reel. I will for sure be sending a screenplay/script.</p>

<p>I also thought to that it retaking my SAT’s would be pointless but wasn’t sure if I should go ahead anyway. I cannot imagine my high school record being valid, but I’m still unsure on this one.</p>

<p>I am heavily involved with each one of the EC’s. Thought about getting involved in more. Is there any specific EC’s that Tisch likes to see? The city I live in is almost opposed to any sort of creative outlets for artists, so that will not make getting involved with EC’s focused in art easy. Another question I wanted to ask, is Tisch impressed at all with athletic EC’s? I absolutley hate sports, which is why Tisch is top choice.</p>

<p>1) Don’t take the SATs. Seriously. I transferred and worked with transfers and the time and effort used to prep/take the SATs again is pointless.
2) NYU does not care about what school you are coming from. </p>

<p>What Tisch is MOST CONCERNED WITH are: college grades, college ECs, essays, portfolio. After four semesters at your current college, NYU won’t really care about high school at all any more. </p>

<p>3) NYU doesn’t care about athletic ECs more than other ECs. It’s more about quality over quantity.</p>

<p>CityfilmTran, this isn’t really an answer to your question, but I plan on transferring into Tisch my junior year. Then again, that’s coming from the Park School at Ithaca College…? So you’re not alone, I guess is what I’m trying to say :)</p>
