Chances of Getting into NYU.

I have lived abroad my whole life but I am an American citizen because my mom is American. My question is does this help me at all with regards to getting into NYU? I have spent my whole life in South Africa and have attended school here and everything so will this increase my chance of getting in because NYU has always been big on diversity etc?

It will definitely give you an upper hand but that alone will not guarantee admission.

I know an asian guy from South Africa that got into Columbia last year - he was also an American citizen because his dad was a citizen. Amazingly enough, his friend (also asian but with better stats) got rejected from Columbia at the same time - was it because he applied as an international? we’re not sure but he was obviously the better applicant.

Anyway, from this experience, I can say that it will give you a teensy advantage.

thanks for your reply.

do you know of any other things that may assist me in getting in? do grades really play a huge role?

I’ll answer your question with the assumption that you are referring to NYU alone.

Grades matter - to some schools more than others. Tisch is a little more lenient with grades but it puts heavy emphasis on talent; Stern takes grades and standardized test scores very seriously. The idea is to have a balanced application overall; keep your grades as high as you can, get involved with activities you are passionate about, and make sure your essay will really speak to admissions officers.

Of course, I am no expert, I am currently in the process of applying to NYU.

What about Gallatin? Do you know anything about their admission stats?

I’m applicant for Gallatin School.
My stat.
applied as transfer
High School GPA-really bad (Went private Prep school)
College GPA 3.6/4.0
Concentration for Gallatin: Photography, and Neurobiology
EC: Science tutor at college, Photo club president for year and half, VP for one semester.
2 personal art exhibit in City Univ of NY.
Phi Theta kappa-honor’s society

Honor’s orgo chem project.

I got denied last semester with pretty much similar stat

So im assuming its rather hard to get in? :)

Gallatin is very picky school. So nobody knows who will takes. I know the girl who got in with 3.2 GPA which is really bad GPA. she got into Gallatin. I got denied same time

What sort of things do they look at?

Are u applying for Freshmen or Transfer?
First of all, Gallatin is independent study program. so they want to see what’s ur concentration.
for ex, I want to study neurobiology. however, I’m photographer. So how I can two different field is “Neurological pathway of artists’ brain work.” To understand, u have to know the artistic mind, and science itself.

Freshman. So ultimately you just need to let them know that you want to do lots of different things with your life and you want to go there because you want to combine things that you’re interested in studying to form one concentration

ACT 34
