Chances of getting into University of Michigan Ann Arbor or University of North Carolina Chapel Hill

I’m an incoming senior
My stats:
top 10% of my class- I will most likely be able to raise rank based on my senior year courses
Lots of extracurriculars: part of robotics club for 4+ years, won many important titles, leadership roles, volunteering, women in stem, etc
also had a part-time job
GPA: 4.7 (weighted)- I’ve taken many ap courses
SAT: 1490
ACT: 33

With these stats, do I have a chance of gaining admission into engineering? Specifically into electrical, chemical, or civil engineering?

Congrats on all your hard work and success in HS!
What is your state of residence?

Also, the only engineering that UNC-CH has is biomedical engineering (in partnership with NC State).

UNC only has biomedical engineering through a partnership with NC State. It is not an engineering school. Are you a resident of NC or Michigan?

Thank you! My state of residence is Texas but I want to apply for computer science at UNC.

I am a resident of Texas but for UNC I plan to apply for computer science.

@AlmostThere2018 @twogirls Thank you! My state of residence is Texas but I want to apply for computer science at UNC.

Congratulations on your accomplishments! I think you are a strong applicant, but unfortunately it is impossible to chance you. The best advice I have for you is to put together the best application you can, and apply. Make sure to have safety and target schools, and be sure to discuss finances with your parents. Good luck!

The problem with going out of state is that you’d be paying triple the tuition with no additional benefit. You’d be better off staying in Texas. CS is a ridiculously employable degree and Texas has the second largest tech economy in the country. Employers are more interested in what program languages you know and what you can do.

Perhaps consider University of Maryland, College Park, James A. Clark school of engineering; it might be a match or a low reach for you.

Michigan EECS is going to be tough, since that SAT is going to be low for Michigan Engineering in general.

Purdue might be a more reasonable shot for you. And nothing wrong with TAMU for Engineering at all. You should have a high enough class rank for assured admissions there and you will save money over an OOS public. And why not Texas Tech?

@Hamurtle I’m also interested in Purdue and recently talked to a college counselor from there who explained the engineering program to me. I think Purdue is a good match for me but it is out of state. I have automatic admission to TAMU but college doesn’t really sit that well with me. None the less I am still applying and it is my safety school

Congrats on all of your hard work! My daughter had very similar stats to you and was not admitted into University of Michigan Engineering after first being deferred. She was admitted to U of Illinois, Purdue, UW Madison, and Boston University. If you are ok with going out of state, your scores will get you a tremendous amount of money at Iowa State, which has a stellar Civil Engineering program. I would also agree that Purdue is a wonderful school to consider, but we were disappointed with their financial package and it was not affordable for our family. Best of luck to you on your search. Don’t be afraid to add some sleeper schools to your list. My daughter ended up committing to a school that she applied to on a whim last minute. It’s a weird journey. Have fun with it!
