I am a Junior in IL.
GPA: 3.91
ACT: 34
Won a few business competitions (1 was sponsored by MIT-IBM), category leader of my speech team, Lead summer coordinator for children and many other accomplishments.
While in Middle school & High School, I took SAT 5 times for a variety of reasons and they aren’t that great.
BTW, I am an US citizen but of Indian origin.
What are my chances in getting into Wharton? I am specifically interested to major in Actuarial Science program but how do I indicate that since Wharton/Penn is part of the common application?
Any advise would be greatly appreciated.
So best to use your ACT.
Your chances are about average or slightly below so you cannot rely on Wharton nor should you.
Your list should include other first tier schools and also ones where Indian students are underrepresented like Notre Dame, Boston College, Wake Forest. You also need some schools where you are clearly in the top 25% of applicants and your state school as a safety.
Another idea is to avoid an undergraduate major in business and opt for economics or math in a core curriculum.
If you are continuing with tennis, that would be a hook.
Taking the SAT five times isn’t a good idea, but any times you took it in middle school should not be on your record. You must submit ACT and SAT scores if you have them though.
Were the business competitions local, state, or national?
As for being of Indian origin, that is immaterial unless you mean Native American.
Many top schools are over 20% Asian. I would presume this statistic includes South Asians as well.
From a strategy standpoint, some top schools have very small Asian populations.
Given the push back on admitting even more Asians students at some schools it is smart to also target those where the numbers are lower. Just common sense.
Took SAT 3 times in middle school and once as a freshman for applying to a special school. Never intended for college. Took SAT as a Junior and got 800 in Math but ACT was 34 (with 35 in Math).
No other IVY other than Wharton) seems to be asking for all standardized test scores.
The competitions were all at a national level.
- 1 sponsored by MIT-IBM specific to IL
- 2 were conducted at a national level.
My goal is to get an undergrad degree in actuarial science - not business or statistics.
Completely agree and that is what I had in mind - i.e. to use only my ACT.
But Penn is asking to submit all test scores, which will probably show the 2 scores taken during High School (assuming middle school testing is not part of test reporting)
I am re-submitting my profile again:
GPA: 3.91u; 4.35w
ACT: 34 (1st shot)
- Won a few business competitions (1 was sponsored by MIT-IBM and 2 national level competitions)
- Own a small business
- Category leader of speech team
- Lead summer coordinator for children
- Was tennis captain in Sophmore year
- Got 34 in ACT in the 1st chance
- Nominated by Math teacher
- several other accomplishments.
While in Middle school & High School, I took SAT 5 times for a variety of reasons and they aren’t that great. Penn asks for all the tests one has taken and that worries me.
I am a born US citizen but my parents are from India. Is it mandatory to indicate my ethnicity?

You can just not answer the ethnicity question. That’s perfectly OK.
Penn will not require you to send tests taken in middle school.
Wharton is a reach for virtually all students. Make sure you have a safety on your list you can afford, definitely get into, and would be Happy to attend.
