Chances on getting into UPenn/Pitt main [PA resident, 3.9 UW GPA, 1390 SAT, low income, for microbiology]

i applied to pitt main in early january. HOWEVER, there was an issue with my application i was not aware of and did not know sat scores had to be sent through college board directly. i was finally able to send in my sat score in late february if i recall correctly, and my application has been in the review stage for about four days

i do anticipate on calling tuesday to check in if i do not hear back by then, i’m pretty antsy about how late everything went in rip. i know my stats make pitt main a target school, but the delay of my application may be the nail in the coffin

i might consider applying to penn. could you give me more info about the general atmosphere, dorms, etc? honestly, it’s worth a shot lol. i am hoping to god pitt works out though, the waiting game is killing me :smiling_face_with_tear:

OH by the way- the medical school on SH’s campus is called LECOM. it’s open for enrollment for undergrad as well, and is commonly enrolled in by PA and other medical majors. it’s pretty fascinating, and the entire campus looks like hogwarts lol

I will think more on this topic, but did you know that Duquesne is part of a consortium that includes Pitt and Carnegie Mellon, among others? Through that you could take 1 class /semester at a different university which could help to broaden the range of classes you could take but also building relationships with other professors and, potentially, their labs.

Do you have more info on this program? From looking briefly at this site, it appears that Seton Hill students move on to the medical school campus after completing 3 or 4 years at Seton Hill, if they were accepted into the pathway program.

that’s very interesting, i did not know that!

that appears to be correct, that’s my bad for having a misconception regarding it. i think some classes for undergrads are taken in the LECOM building, but it is probably separate from seton hill :))

LECOM is actually in Erie.

there is also a smaller LECOM campus on SH campus: i actually saw it during my tour a few months ago!

Thanks for answering my question :+1:

@CCName1: LECOM has a branch there but students need to be admitted to the program to take classes there in their 4th year…

  • @bonkistobias were you admitted to the BSDO/LECOM program? (It’s actually quite well-known with lots of participating colleges). My understanding is that you’re interested in research, not in treating patients directlybor being a family doctor, so if I understood your interestes correctly the BSDO program wouldn’t be a good match but did I get that wrong?

Penn State is a state-related university like Pitt, but it’s the land grant university meaning they have some special missions. The campus is HUGE so there are buses that take students all around though it’s very walkable and pretty. There’s a very nice arboretum, lots of dorms, a concert hall, a theater, an outdoors and 2 indoors pools, a couple gyms, literally hundreds of research institutes and labs, a magnificent library (I think libraries are super important for colleges) with comfortable rooms, a maker space, rooms for group work, personal desks you can lock, comfortable reading rooms, films, an ancient map room - and, okay, Penn State afficionados will tell you not to miss the stuffed mountain lion that gave its life to a hunter 150 years ago before becoming the school’s mascot. Walk off and cross the street, you’re in State College - the unimaginative name is a tell, it’s a college town. The Honors College is top5 in the country.
The special Immunology major with epidemiology lab that I recommended you apply to is in a specific college (called Ag traditionally but it’s now a big misnomer) that groups together various science majors deemed essential for the State, including Agricultural development, Bio Engineering, Renewable Systems, Pharmacology, PreVet, etc. And for this reason that college has a lot of money (ie., they have lots of special scholarships and really nice classrooms, labs, etc.) Because the major is hidden away into that college, your odds are not toooo bad though odds remain high you’d be branched if the major is full :frowning:

I do think Pitt would be better for you but you need other options.
The Duquesne consortium that @AustenNut found sounds perfect for you BTW.

i don’t believe i was admitted into LECOM, i was mainly looking into completing a bio major at SH :))

that actually sounds really cool tbh, i will definitely look into it! i would really prefer staying closer to home (thus pitt), but options are important! i want some distance but not a TON (another reason why VT makes me worried). i am very independent but am really close with my family as well

I strongly suspect that your Pennsylvania options will be your best ones. But, if you’re looking for additional ones, have you thought about West Virginia University?

Morgantown is about 1h20m from Pittsburgh, so it’s pretty much closer than some place like Virginia Tech, but it’s definitely feeling like going away. The university has had some financial difficulties, but I think that the bulk of its offerings will remain. You would qualify for at least a $17k scholarship and you could be eligible for more, including a diversity scholarship (worth $2500/year). The website indicates that the $17k scholarship is for students who either apply or are accepted (can’t remember which) by June 1. I didn’t look for a deadline for the diversity scholarship, though.

I don’t know if it would be the best major for your interests, but if you chose to study Environmental Microbiology, you’d also be eligible for another $2k/year (Innovators Scholarship) which students who plan to major in certain colleges are eligible for…including Davis College of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Design where Environmental Microbiology is housed.

Other majors that seem to be potential fits include:

I’ve heard good things about Morgantown and I believe there is public transportation or a university shuttle that goes around town, but this is something you’d want to double check on. If you’re interested in WVU, perhaps @Gatormama might have additional insight to share.

If that can reassure you, I can tell you with 100% certainty that you can make State College->Greensburg in under 3 hours and that you will find people going in that direction.

Okay, one more urgent task for this weekend: apply to Berea college. It’s an excellent college that ONLY admits bright, lower income students. Very selective but if you’re admitted, you get a full tuition scholarship and you work every week for room&board (which is heaviky subsidized too). Deadline is SUNDAY.

URSINUS is in PA and still accepts applications.

Muhlenberg might work but I’ll need to think of how you can frame your email when you contact them. They meet 100% need so if admitted it’d be a near full ride (financial need might be an impedimentto admission :grimacing:).
Both Ursinus and Muhlenberg are in PA so you’d get the new state scholarship too.

If you’re interested in a smaller liberal arts college (i.e. something like Ursinus), then you might have additional homework: Allegheny. They’ve extended their deadline until April 1 and they’ve also instituted a Commitment to Access program that covers the full tuition for Ohio & Pennsylvania families that earn less than $50k/year. The deadline for submission of the CAP info is March 31st…so 2 days from now.

You can read more about Allegheny on the Colleges That Change Lives webpage:

Wow, wonderful find! And a great college.

Oohh, made me think of a great college for undergraduate research: WOOSTER!
Worth doing like for Muhlenberg&emailing them

Hope you found a chocolate egg or two  :rabbit: :chocolate_bar: :egg: and have lots of spring energy :cherry_blossom: :herb: :bouquet:

Today is the last day to apply to Berea (basically, a guaranteed full ride if you’re admitted).

Next: finish up your PSU app for the Immunology major see your DMs for the statement and see if you can send your CommonApp to Allegheny, Wooster, Ursinus, WVU, Muhlenberg. The “common” parts should be ready to go.

also, berea is in kentucky and WAY out of how far away i want to be from home :sob: i just finally looked them up. also, kentucky as a state is not very lgbtq+ friendly, with them having a 3.25/44.5 on the lgbtq policy scale (5.25/21.5 on sexual orientation and -2/23 on gender identity) according to lgbtmap.org. if i go to college out of state, i need to make sure it is safe for me :)) i appreciate the recommendation though!
