Chances on the coasts

Hi, my name’s Paige and I’m just wondering what you guys think about my prospects at some schools, so here’s my breakdown.

Academic Info
Female, out-of-state for all, white, incoming senior
Ranked 80/707, top 12% at a decently competitive public school in Minnesota.
3.88 U/W GPA, school doesn’t report weighted.

SAT I:
First sitting: 1850
Second sitting: 2020 (640 CR, 610 M, 710 W)
ACT:
30 Composite
30R, 27M, 32E, 30S

I don’t really plan on sending in my SAT, and I plan to retake the ACT later this fall.

I’ve been taking all the honors courses that my school offers, including
AP World History, AP Stat, and AP Lang/Comp. Next year I’m signed up for
AP Calc (AB and BC), AP Comp Gov, and some other honors courses. Also notable, I started taking high school math courses in 7th grade.

School EC’s:
Varsity Alpine Skiing (9-12, captain in 12th)
9th grade “A” softball team (8-9, captain in 9th)
Dare to be Real anti-racism group (11-12)
NHS member (12)
School newspaper (Op/Ed editor 11, Editor-in-Chief 12)
PSAT’s will probably get me commended

Out-of-School EC’s:
Weekly volunteer at a local hospital (first in oncology and now in the
er about 4 hours a week)
Student leader on the Board of Student Volunteers at the hospital I volunteer for
Volunteer at my church, including lots of fundraisers/projects to
benefit impoverished countries such as mission trips, Feed My Starving Children, and the 30 hour famine (7-12)
Part time job as a receptionist at 10-20 hrs/week year round(11-12)
2007 Nominee for NYLF (National Youth Leadership Forum)
Red Cross Lifeguard/First Aid/CPR-PR certified (11-12) [really only useful for showing interest in my field]
Blood donor on a regular basis [again, only shows interest]

I know I probably seem pretty average as far as CC goes, but my essays
seriously speak to who I am, and why I’m so passionate about public
health and epidemiology (which is what I intend to pursue) and teacher
recommendations ought to be very good.

What, do you think, are my chances at:
UC Berkeley, UCLA, Johns Hopkins, USC, UNC - CH, and Georgetown

Or, are there any other colleges you would recommend for me?
Thanks!

They’re all HUGE reaches. Your scores aren’t high enough to get you into Berkeley or UCLA out of state. And I’d be worried about the rest of them, too. I hope that’s not your whole list. If it is, leave one or two on there, and scrap the rest.

It’s not all of mine, it’s only the ones that I’m questioning my chances at. You really think that my ACT won’t help me at all, especially if I can raise it to a 32-33 (which I’m confident I can)?

What else do you suggest I do to up my chances/what other schools do you think I should consider?

bumpbumpbump

sorry for the bump, i’d really like some feedback/constructive criticism.
thanks in advance

the act as it is will only hurt you
if you manage to get above a 33 you would stand a very good chance at some of those schools
keep in mind that some of those schools require SAT IIs and when you send in the SAT II scores the SAT score is sent along with them

Speaking for Georgetown… you need to up your SATs, and really depending on which school in Georgetown you’re applying to… seems like you might be interested in Georgetown’s Nursing and Health Services School…

Consider UW-Madison because it has a reciprocal agreement with Minnesota. It’ll be a good semi-safety.

yeah, aside from these i intend to apply to the u of m and uw-madison. i really would like to push myself to some better schools who are strong in my major (public/international health) because, to be honest, i sort of slacked off in high school.

thank you all for your feedback, i really appreciate it :)

You sound like an interesting person-lots of great interests. With your interest in public health, you may wish to consider some of these schools in California–not as notable as UCB or UCLA–but will give you a great education in your field: Cal State University East Bay, San Jose State, San Francisco State.
