Just curious, since my counselor didn’t think I was “good enough” material for some of the better UCs. (But then again, all she did was promote the school where her daughter’s at, so maybe she’s just a bit biased…) Do you think I can make it into UCSD, UCLA, and Cal?

oh they’re being pessimistic. you’re definitely in for SD. LA is a slight reach/match. it’s really not THAT far from you, since you do have leadership in there (for a year) and have done lots of volunteering. Cal might be a reach though…

I was basically the same as you with a few more APs, higher GPA, lower SAT and an athlete. I got into all the UCs [CAL/LA/SD included] as well as CalTech, Stanford, Columbia, Cornell, and wait listed at MIT. My counselor also told me I wouldn’t make it in to those schools and I pretty much showed her. Don’t let anyone tell you you can’t do it and don’t decide not to apply somewhere because you don’t think you will get in. My counselor told me freshman year I should work hard and maybe achieve a 3.0 weighted gpa and probably attend a 4 year college [I am a disabled student so standards were super low] and then she forgot about me. I surprised the hell out of her when I was the top graduating student in my class [of 500]. You CAN do it.
