Hook- I have lost 90 lbs since my Junior year, got in shape. I wrote about it for my essay, felt it was pretty good.

I know my stats aren’t very good compared to a lot of people, but I would just like an honest opinion. I just got rejected by UCLA (with ELC status), so I am feeling pretty down. Any opinions are welcomed, just wondering if I have any chance (I know it sometimes a guessing game, so no worries.)

probably 25-30 percent, Reach.

cool! i used to play varsity golf at my HS in soCal, what HS did you go to? we may have played each other o.O

I meant to say CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Champs, not South. Sorry. But, I play for Johansen Highschool.

aw, well if you get in to Cal, go for walk-on tryouts for golf. :)

Nice Ec’s

but UCB weighs heavily on GPA+SAT/ACT

20%

If you do get in, you’d most likely struggle with your classes anyways.

thats a lie, dont listen to caiacs. I know people with much lower SAT and GPA’s than you that have done great at college. Lots of people think that high school gpa and sat will equal a great college gpa but it is just not true. If you do get in you have just as good a shot at doing well as everyone ther

If he couldn’t even do well in high school, what makes you think that he has just as much of a chance as someone that did do well in high school at succeeding in college?

That’s like saying someone who can barely stay afloat in a pool has the same chance as a professional swimmer at winning an Olympic medal . . . .

High school success does not equal success in college, but it certainly affects it.

i wonder how many people have a good gpa in HS and then fail and/or quit in college and then just settle for low GPAs.

likewise, i wonder how many people have bad gpas (and then somehow wind up here at Cal) and then decide to dominate and get a stellar GPA.

i imagine the first one happens way more often (esp with HS gpa inflation (?)) . i think its a lot harder to improve and strive from struggling in high school than it is to just lay back and get your B’s and C’s as they come.

Is my GPA really that bad? I know its not phenomenal, but its not horrible either. Taking 5 AP classes last year ruined me, to many Bs. But I don’t know if it will dictate whehter I’m going to be able to handle a college course load, or fail college. That’s a little harsh, isn’t it?

I personally thought APs were a complete joke so . . . the tests (don’t know how hard classes were at your school, the difficulty of “AP classes” vary a lot from producing entire classes that get 5’s to half the class getting under 3) are definitely not as rigorous as coursework in related area at Berkeley.

Well, yeah, I agree. Im sure the APs come no where close to Berkeley. The difficulty levels do fluctuate a lot, but I took more AP classes than anyone at my school, so I tried to mimic a highly rigorous schedule as best as I could. I don’t know if its good enough, I can only hope at this point.

you’re gpa isn’t that bad, people have gotten in with even less. don’t sweat it, good luck.

I’d say you are also a reach, mostly because of your “lowish” (for UCB) SAT I and II’s. You definitely are not “out of the running”, however! Best of luck in the coming week or so!!

I read on AskMrsSun that Berkeley is willing to overlook mediocre test scores/GPA as long as the applicant has strong ECs or has overcome some sort of challenge. Do you think i might qualify for that, with my weight loss and all (wrote about for personal statement, helped me learn to persevere through anything, determination, etc.), and are my ECs strong enough?

i think you have a pretty good shot
i have horrible scores and ucsd accepted me, im hoping for berkeley too since i got a supplement from them

congrats on UCSD! Yeah, I’m hoping for Berkeley too, I didn’t get a supplement though. We will just have to wait and see what happens.
