I’m a senior this school year and I have a list of schools that I’m interested in. I would appreciate if I could get some feedback to see how I would fair on these admission boards. I’d also be interested in suggestions of other schools that could fit me with my resume and intended major.
I posted this three weeks ago to no response so I am posting this again hoping to get some replies.
17 year old white male from a competitive public school in Kansas
Unweighted GPA: 3.91/4.00 (top 12%)
Weighted GPA: 4.43 (top 8%)
9-11: have taken most honors/AP classes possible for my schedule.
Senior year course load:
-AP Government
-AP Literature
-AP Calculus AB
-AP Physics 2
-AP Spanish Language
-Economics
-Symphonic Orchestra
-Gifted Ed
ACT Composite: 33 (Math: 34, English: 33, Reading: 32, Science: 31)
SAT: have not taken, nor subject tests. I’m debating if I should take them this fall as well as retaking ACT. Also looking for a suggestion on that.
AP: European History-5, US History-5, English Language-5, Physics 1-4
Eagle Scout: I expect to receive my Eagle Scout award in mid September. The project and scoutmaster conference are done. I am turning it in next week and will have the board of review in September, which is when I become an Eagle Scout. Led a group of 20 or so people building twelve shelves for a local charter school. I was able to have $1200 worth of shelving material donated by a storage company to my project.
Orchestra Awards: Received a superior “1” rating at the regional and state music festival as a member of a cello ensemble during my sophomore and junior years. I also led and conducted at larger chamber orchestra during my junior year. I had to conduct and work with my fellow peers on a piece for the regional music festival. Received a “1” rating at that regional music festival, the first time in school history that a chamber orchestra received a “1” rating at that festival and therefor qualifying for state. We received a “2” rating there. It should be noted that the chamber orchestra at my school is made up of the lesser talented students in the orchestra, so being able to lead them to state is kind of a big deal at least in my perspective.
Youth Civic Leadership Conference participant: the Robert Dole Instititue of Politics at the University of Kansas holds a three day leadership camp for rising seniors. I was nominated by my high school and then chosen by the Dole Institute in order to attend. Participated in leadership and civics seminars as well as had the chance to meet and discuss with several Kansas state legislators. The camp had 60 students from across the state.
Kansas Boys’ State: spent a week running a simulated state government with hundreds of rising senior boys from all across the state. My job was in the House of Representatives. Learned core values in leadership, civics, teamwork, and self-determination.
-Political Science club, going to try to possibly get a leadership position and advance the club’s activities
-National Honors Society officer
-High School mentor, as a junior (gonna do this again senior year) mentored freshmen and helped them transition into high school
-Spanish Club member
-Presidential Service Award (9th and 11th grade years)
-Over 350 hours of community service
-Worked two jobs over two and a half years
My intended major would be International Relations/Poly Sci. Any of those kind of majors in the humanities.
Here are ALL of the schools that I have considered applying to:
Kansas
Kansas State
Alabama
Virginia (legacy)
Georgia (chance me on their Foundation Fellowship Scholarship?)
Georgetown (legacy)
Washington University St. Louis
Carnegie Mellon
Swarthmore
Haverford
University of Edinburgh in Scotland
Again, I just want to see where I would stand at these schools, and I want to know if there are any other schools that I should consider that I have not listed here.
