-Two recs, one from my journalism teacher/newspaper advisor and one from my AP English & Comp teacher. I think my essay is good judging from what others have said, but I find it uninteresting…maybe that’s just me though (my essay is about how my parents never paid for my stuff [like clothes, etc] and so I learned how to be responsible with money, but I told it in an anecdotal way)

I really think it’s my lack of extracurriculars that are going to get me - I realized too late that it’s important to be involved in school. And the colleges on my list are ones that I’m interested in, but I’d really like to do more research and see what colleges actually fit me. Thanks to anyone who replies. :)

Bump? Anyone?

-SUNY Binghamton - reach
-SUNY Geneseo - reach
-SUNY New Paltz - match
-U of Delaware - match
-Syracuse University - match

those are the ones I’m familiar with. What do you want to study and what sort of school atmosphere are you looking for? I went to Syracuse for 2 years and then transferred and my son is now at New Paltz, so I can give you more insight into those 2.

Thanks!
I’m thinking about going into either an English major or Journalism. I want to be a writer when I’m older.
I’m totally lost with college though - I don’t know what kind of atmosphere I’m looking for (I just don’t want a tiny college)

Syracuse is known for its Communications school and New Paltz has a good English/Creative writing dept. All the schools you mentioned probably would work for the majors you’re considering so it really comes down to what environment you want. Do you like more rural or closer to a large city? Do you have a certain distance that you would travel from home - do you mind flying or do you only want to be a drive away? Do you want a state school experience or a private school feeling? Is money an issue? Is the weather a factor? The best thing is to visit the schools you are considering and get a feel for what they’re like. The best time to visit is when school is in session and during the winter when you can see what it’s really like most of the school year.

-University North Carolina at Chapel Hill - in state or OOS? OOS i would say high reach but if in state possible
-Boston University - low reach/match
-Northeastern University - match
-College of William and Mary - reach

Those are the ones I am familiar with. Maybe pick up a job during the school year or some more community service hours and definitely fine tune your essay.

LilyMoon - Thanks for your help! I don’t want to be too rural, but I want to be near a small city/large town so that there are things to do around the college. Money is a little bit of an issue but not a big one. I prefer warm but not hot weather and I’d rather be around 150 miles away from home. I’ve visited SUNY Binghamton (which I liked a lot, although the campus is kind of ugly), SUNY Geneseo (the surrounding town is tiny but I liked the school) and SUNY Stony Brook (which I didn’t like, plus it’s too close to home).

dotdude - Thanks! As for UNC, I’m OOS (I live in NY)

We are on Long Island as well. The 2 hour drive to New Paltz is a plus - it’s far enough away to feel like you’re away somewhere but close enough not to have to fly and to come home or have a visit when we feel like it. The town is funky and fun and it’s near Poughkeepsie if you need a mall fix.

When I went to Syracuse I flew back and forth. It was too cold and rural for me back then so I transferred. Also I personally found the student body a little bit snobbish.
