Chances: Wesleyan U. (Reach) / NYU

Gender: Male
Ethnicity: Asian
Major: Business (Specific: Business Management or Marketing/Advertising Researcher)
Goal: Wesleyan University CT

-Academics
Top 20 Public High School in New Jersey
GPA: 3.8 weighted (A- range), ? unweighted (Honors & AP’s weighed the same)
-> Mostly steady throughout, but during junior year a slow rise
Rank: ~80 out of 330

SAT: 1840 (680 math, 600 reading, 560 writing w/ 10 essay) (Planning to take again Oct. since I didn’t really study for it)
ACT: (Planning to take Sept. … Should I take the writing section w/ it?)
SAT2: 680 Chem, 630 US Hist., 620 Math2C (God it’s horrible… Planning on Nov.)
AP: US. Hist - Not sure since overseas so can’t check but prob a 3~4
-> If I can I’ll probably substitute my SAT with the ACT since I heard it covers most college requirements so SAT1 + SAT2 = ACT.

Soph: Cross country (V) (2nd JV League), Spring Track (V)
Junior: Cross country (V) (1st team all league, 2nd team all county), Spring Track (V)

Business Grades
Frosh: Business & Management - A
Soph: Marketing A+ / Advertising A+
Junior: Economics A-
-> Business isn’t all too hard for me. I don’t take notes in class… All I do is pay attention in class and usually get it right away. I’ll change the habit once in college but so far I think I can grab the fundamentals.

My overall goal is to get into Wesleyan University but I wouldn’t mind getting into NYU or another good college.

What would be my chances and how much more significant would it be as a factor from choosing ED, EA, and Regular Acceptance. I know my academics lack in comparison to other people who are accepted in Wesleyan (Not as much worried about NYU) but hopefully there are other factors that will compensate.
I appreciate a reply back since I’m both worried/excited to know.
Thank you.

Right now both Wesleyan and NYU are both reaches. Your SAT score of 1280(out of 1600) is below average for both schools. And for NYU are you talking about CAS or Stern?(since you were talking about a business major)

Yeah, I don’t know much about Wesleyan but at NYU you’d be a pretty high reach for CAS and a super reach for Stern. Most CAS students I know had SAT scores between 2100 and 2200, and Stern students’ scores are even higher. Is your high school very competitive? Otherwise, a class rank of 80 is extremely low for these schools. However, running could pull you into either school with relative ease…

I’m curious as to why you’re applying to these two schools. Are you aware of how different they are from one another?

wait the wesleyan in ct isnt that hard. i’d guess match

perhaps a reach at NYU, definitely a reach at Wesleyan.

The good news about Wesleyan is that, because they are a liberal arts college (minus the few grad programs), they take a more holistic approach to admissions. They might be more forgiving of your SAT scores by focusing on other strong parts of your application while NYU might not be.

In line with bdl108’s comment, both of these schools are reaches with your current stats, unless you are recruited for track. In addition, Wesleyan does not have a business major or minor. You might want to consider some additional schools, including national universities such as Fordham, Tulane, Boston University, Rutgers and Syracuse and smaller schools that have a business program such as Skidmore, Franklin & Marshall and University of Richmond.
