Chances

what would my chances at the following schools be:
UCB,UCLA,UCSD,UCD,UCI,UCSB,UCSC

3.7 hs gpa, 3.4 uc (they cap at 8 honors), 3.3 uw
1500 sat1, 7902c, 660writing, 720 biology
Competitive high school that doesn’t rank
Assuming my ec’s and essays are good

Thank you all who respond

i’ve taken the following ap and honors classes
alg2 h, chem h, trig h, english 11h
chem ap, us hist ap, bio ap, lang ap, calc bc ap, physics ap, and stats ap

and my total combined ec hours are around 1600 hours, for everything including sports, work, and clubs

HALILHOPA:

UCB: Match
UCLA: Match
UCSD: Safe Match
UCD: Safety
UCSB: Safety
UCI: Safety
UCSC: Super Safety

i know that uc’s are primarily based on grade point, but even with 3.4 uc, i have a decent shot at them all?

anyone else?

i believe not

berkeley no chance
la far reach
sd far reach
davis match/reach
irvine match
sb match
sc safety match

yeah I’m sorry, I think Flopsy is being overly generous as well. UCB and UCLA are becoming extremely difficult to get into, and I would say that both are reaches for you. SD is also fairly hard, but you should be pretty good for the other schools.

what about chances at sd,la for non impact majors and davis and below for impact majors. How much does impact major affect you and if i put non impact as 2nd choice, that gives me the same chance for admission as if i put nonimpact for my first choice right?

I can only speak for UCLA (having spoken to someone on the adcom about this), but it really doesn’t matter what major you put on the application - they don’t look at it unless you’re applying to the Engineering or Theatre programs. If you’re applying to anything in Letters and Science, it doesn’t matter what you put on the app.

Wow - just yesterday, someone in the “What Are My Chances?” board accused me of being too pessimistic!

The OP has reasonable chances at UCB/UCLA/UCSD but I’d rate them in the Match-minus category. Yes, the stats may be around the average but you have way below average chances if you have average stats, just because so many people are in the same cohort, follow? The SAT II’s and the GPA aren’t as strong as one might like.

For the others, I think the OP is pretty good. EC hours are widely discounted and don’t mean that much. Too many people stretch the truth. Or fib. Or outrageously lie.

Icarus is correct: major doesn’t matter unless it’s Theater or Engineering, which mean that the apps get thrown into a different stack.

Flopsy, it’s hard for some people to hear it, but over-optimism is far more rampant on CC than over-pessimism. And something to remember: this year will be more brutal than last because of the increased number of seniors…but next year will be worse still. Peaks in about 2008-2010.

if i get into a ucsd or la with my second major choice (biophysics), how hard would it be to switch after 2 years into the impact major which is my first choice (bioeng).

Really, really, hard.

I think you guys are being a tad harsh…

UC Berkeley’s averages:
High School GPA: 4.15
SAT I Score: 1340
SAT II Math (1C and 2C) Score: 690
SAT II Writing Score: 669

He’s lacking in the GPA, which is a big factor, but beats the average for SAT I and mathiic, while falling behind a bit on the writing SAT II. HALILHOPA, you definitely have a chance at berk and la, although they may be slight reaches because of your GPA.

Iamhung, not being harsh. I’ve seen the rejection/acceptance cycles for the past two years. What is generally overlooked is that if you have average stats you have a far less than average chance of getting in. Think about…assuming that to a point, you have more applicants the further down the scale you go and then map that to an accepted class. Conversely, only 25 percent of a class may have stats better than X (the top of the interquartile range) but the odds of a student getting accepted are more like 90 percent.

i’ve never heard of a cap of honors classes, thats really kind of a bummer and would be very hard to explain somehow on your application. obviously, it would have helped your gpa immensely. but in my experience, the UCs have been kind of fickle, so if the more prestigious ones swing your way, they’ll find something in your app other than your uc gpa. mine was 3.85 and i’m at ucla (and was accepted to ucb, ucsd, and uci) even though the average was 3.4. i know kids with lower gpas in high school that are here for one reason or another (they think). its just, you never know what it will be. the best advice i can give you is, put every inch of effort you can into your essays. a lot of guys with 1500+ SATs and 4.0+ gpas just half-ass their essays and think they’ll get in. take their spot and separate yourself from the pack if you want to get into the top schools like UCB, UCLA, and even UCSD. as you are, i think you’re closer to a match for davis, irvine, and santa barbara. santa cruz is more of a safety.

He’s talking about UCs capping the maximum number of honors/ap semesters being counted at 8. This is to prevent kids from taking all honors/ap classes and getting a 5.0 weighted gpa for the 10th and 11th grades.

And again, for those who haven’t seen UC San Diego’s pt system…

Step I - Academic Review Maximum Consideration
Uncapped Grade Point Average (GPA) 4,500
Scores of All Required Exams 3,200
Number of “A-G” Courses Beyond the Minimum 500

Step II - Additional Academic Factors
Eligibility in the Local Context (ELC) 300
Educational Environment 300

Step III - Socioeconomic Factors
Low Family Income 300
First Generation College Attendance 300

Step IV – Personal Characteristics and Achievement Factors
Demonstrated Leadership 300
Special Talents/Achievements/Awards 300
Community and Volunteer Service 300
Participation in Pre-Collegiate/Motivational and Enrichment Programs 300
Special Circumstances/Personal Challenges 500

7,456 was the cut off for last year. HALILHOPA has ~6500 for the academic part; it’s gonna be close at ucsd, and iffy at ucb and ucla since they’re even more selective.

do u have that for any other schools

http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/undergrad_adm/selecting/camp_profiles.html

I think all the UCs but Berkeley and LA use some sort of point based system like that.
