hi, i just wanted to get a straw poll of sorts as to what my chances for RD acceptance are at Wash U

3.5 unweighted gpa at difficult boarding school (The Lawrencevill School)
11 APs
2180 SAT 1
760 Math 2, 770 US history, 680 Chem
one 5 on an AP and four 4s
french horn, electric bass and guitar all of highschool (first chair in orchestra for french horn)
and tennis all 4 years of high school

Maybe, your GPA is a little weak for them, but your scores are good and unless you want to play in the university orchestra i dont know how much it will help. I was second chair cello in the orchestra and i don’t think that has helped me. But I am not an admissions rep so I could be totally off, goodluck!

lville06 -
I hope you get in because I have very similar stats to you. My GPA is a little higher and my SATs are a little lower, and I play tennis too and live in NJ. So good luck, I think you have a pretty decent shot.

You certainly have a shot, but it will depend on a few things you haven’t told us. Are you applying RD?

–Class rank. I assume Lawrenceville doesn’t rank but you should at least have an idea of what decile or quintile you fall in. Did Wash U admit anyone from L-ville ED1 or ED2 this year?

–Is L-ville a realiable feeder to Wash U? If admitted RD, do L’ville students enrol in Wash U? Wash U is notorious for waitlisting students they don’t think will attend.

–Have you shown interest–visiting, interviewing, contacting admissions, applying for scholarships? (Did your GC nominate you for a Danforth?)

–Are you applying for financial aid?

–Do you have any hooks? URM, legacy, recruited athlete. You mention the French horn–did you send a tape?

–Is your family wealthy and likely to be a substantial contributor to Wash U? Many universities, including Wash U, check home zip codes and parents’ occupations to determine this.

Also, you might want to tell us your SAT M and V. Would give us a better idea where you stand in relation to those accepted last year and ED this year.

um…bad news as far as interest and people who applied last year
i havent shown as much interest as i should have save letting my college counsler know its one of my top choices and last year like 6 kids got waitlisted
also the sat breakdown was V730 M740 W710

A ditto on the waitlist issue. My daughter was waitlisted last year and there were quite a few postings then showing that folks with real high qualifications were going on the list and those who might have lesser qual’s but had shown strong interest got in. (Of course, there are highly qualified people being admitted as well – I don’t want to diss anyone, particularly since my son attends WUSTL!) They want to be people’s first choice (gets that yield rate up), not a backup for the Ivies.

Anyway, there were a number of people who got into Ivies but got waitlisted at WUSTL. My daughter was one. I think they sensed (correctly) that her top choice was elsewhere.

lville06, you do have a chance, particularly if you show them some strong reason for wanting WUSTL and have some sort of hook or distinctive thing about your application. Places like WUSTL don’t decide things by just looking at stats. Once you are at a certain level – and I think you are – they look at other things. I don’t remember my son’s GPA offhand, but I think he was in the same ballpark as you.

Would an interest in business and the PNP major - philosophy, neuroscience and psychology - I think Wash U might be one of the only schools to offer both of these as majors - be considered a good reason to want to go there? Were alot of very good people deferred from early decision - or more waitlisted from RD?
