Chances

I just got a brochure from UChicago and it seems like a nice place. How selective is UChicago?

GPA
Soph: 3.4, 3.4
Junior: 3.3, 4.0
(special circumstances beginning of junior year)

ACT:35
SAT:2310

EC
2 Varsity Sports
5 Leadership positions (president, VP or secretary)
3 National Level Awards (In a competition)
Played in Carniegie hall
Numerous medals/awards for violin
Internship

I’d like to know my chances at Chicago

Thanks

Probably better than mine.

you have decent chances now, if your gpa were higher, then you’d have great chances

yeah that’s weird…your scores are good. do you go to some really hard high school or something?

My ex got deferred with a 34 ACT, 3.5 GPA (his soph gpa hit a low point just like yours), and great ECs. I think they might take him in the end, because he’s really a one-of-a-kind kid. his essays were great, and the teachers love him so his recs were probably great too. devote a lot of time to the essays, and be sure to ask the right teachers.

dark: no, I just slacked off in the beginning (fresh, soph year)
I pulled it together junior year, but then my friend committed suicide early into the semester…

Does UChicago look at freshman year?

i’mnota_girl, your ex was a guy? If so, that’s totally cool…I was just wondering if I had read incorrectly.

Yes, badkarm, Uchicago looks at freshman year, but they will also take notice of improved grades.

Something like that happened to me sophomore year too, and that made my grades slump as well.

I got accepted, though. I think you’ll be fine.

i think your chances are tough. they are big on grades, more than sat’s for sure

They’re much bigger on essays.

AndiORz: really? I heard how uchicago puts a lot of emphasis on essays, but I didn’t know it was to that degree

Coquettish, PM sent :)

It’s not based solely on your essays, but it is more so than at other schools. If you have perfect stats and they don’t like you, they won’t accept you.

Of course. No school would base decisions solely on essays. Although I am glad Uchicago looks at essays more because I am more of the lit/arts type than a math/engineering, even if I plan to eventually go to business school. I got a brochure for Uchicago and the place looks really nice. That got me into looking into it, and if I have a chance I may apply.

Essays are all I have to offer.

Are you really being honest with yourself?

I am the only person I can be truly honest with.

I smell fear of discovery.
You’re hiding something, and I don’t want to know what it is.

It’s my sexual orientation.
