Given this hypothetical situation:
A certain prospective student (whose name will remain anonymous) has great potential in the areas of math and science. He recieved the NEST student award from MIT, and has awards from UCLA for his participation in their AP readiness program for Biology and Chemistry. His AP scores are mediocre (3,3,4,5) and is taking all the hardest courses he can at school. He is even taking college physics and college calculus. He is also very sexy. Oooh how sexy…oooohhhh…ok. But, there is “grey area” on his application. This area makes this student very very sad. He has “under-par” SAT scores! AHHHHHHHHHHH! His SAT 1 score is 1330 and his SAT IIs are 670,680,and 650. He doesnt have a single score over 700. But other than that, he has great extra curriculars including lots of research experience (12 yrs of soccer, 6 yrs of baseball, 4 yrs of violin, 3 yrs of guitar, 4 yrs of tennis, Future Teachers of America, Science Bowl, Academic Decathalon, Volunteer work, Tutoring, pillaging and plundering (arrrrr), cooking, and some more plundering, creator of a cartoon (spud man), etc etc) He has doen research at Caltech with cosmic rays and plasma physics at UCLA. Is his chance shot because of his low SAT scores, please tell me…ummm…and I’ll tell him.
Thanks to all who reply

What’s the NEST award?
what were the AP courses corresponding to the scores?
GPA?
SAT I breakdown? Is English a second language?
what are the SAT IIs in?

Research always looks good…
I know for a fact that someone was admitted last year with a lower SATI score than you. I don’t know what her other stats were, but the SATI score alone won’t do you in.
If you are one of the best overall in your school, the admissions committee might figure that the school you’re at is a limiting factor to your SAT and AP scores, so as long as you have a decent GPA I would think that you still have as good a chance as anyone. When you add on the fact that you are both very sexy and a pirate, as well as a cook, if you had a parrot I would say that they’d probably want you so badly that they’d get you an Axline scholarship (full ride merit-based scholarship, includes a SURF before freshman year).

The AP Scores Biology (4), Chemistry (3), English Lang (3), US Hist (5)
SAT I V:660 M:670 (No, english is not my second language)
SAT II : Math IIC: 670, Biology:650, Writing:680, History:670, Chemistry:waiting

The NEST student award is an award from MIT that is given to a ostudent who shows initiative in encouraging the continuation of awareness of science and technology
My GPA unwieghted is a 4.0 and wieghted its a 4.200
I am 3/188 ranked at my school (small school)
Yes, I am a sexy Pirate who cooks…arrrr
Any ideas for the box? I’m stumped
Thanks a lot

flirting online hmmmmph…

PS told you so
Shir
the other sexy pirate that cooks… arrrrr

For the box, just remember that it’s your chance to show them any side of yourself you want. There’s a lot of potential in that little box, but don’t stress about it… you’ll figure something out by the time your application’s due. Whatever you want to share with the admissions committee.
I would give you examples or tell you what I did (mine was pretty boring, I’m disappointed in myself now), but I’m pretty sure that they would only limit you rather than guide you.
Given your GPA and rank, your chances are higher than I thought.

Good luck!

I’m going to say low chance - I think that the scores are probably going to do you in. While they aren’t the only factor, they’re weak across the board, and the fact that your only five is in US History isn’t going to help. A lot of folks have six or seven fives by the time they apply, with otherwise similar applications, so you’re going to be competing against that…
