chances

Hi guys my name is taylor and i am a junior in houston texas

GPA: 4.59 out of 6
128/676
660 math 650 verbal
30 act

Extracurriculars: baseball 3 years, NHS, Stu Council, ASL club,

Community Service: 200 hrs+ at local little league umpiring and mentoring

This is a quick look at my stats there is more

think ive go a chance?

please give me an honest answer whether i have a chance at each of these schools. It wont hurt my fellings. LOL

I don’t think anyone can give you an accurate chances idea because everyone that applies to this school is amazingly smart and brings something new to the table for the adcoms. Your guess on chances is as good as mine.

(I’ll have to go reply to Alexandre’s thread after school because i’m just on lunch right now. I’ll get to it. - just in case he’s checking this  )

northwestern is a little random with the admissions process
sometimes they reject really good students and accept less good ones
they focus HEAVILY on the essay

i would say it depends on how well you write and whether you can think of something inspiring to write about
your grades aren’t terribly impressive and i would suggest you retake one of those standardized tests

unless of course you are good enough to get recruited for baseball

I think your chances are very, very low, unless you are recruited for something. Academically, you are nowhere near the standard.

that’s funny normajean- out of all the essays i wrote for college admissions, i was shameful of the essays i sent to northwestern- they just didn’t demonstrate my writing ability.

although, that just goes to further prove your point that northwestern is really random. i totally agree. i’ve talked to a lot of other nu students about this, and everybody seems to be here because of a different bright spot on their application.

Taylor, as it stands, Northwestern would be a reach for you. As some have mentioned, your stats are significantly lower than the Northwestern norm. On the other had, as others have mentioned, essays are central to the Northwestern application process, Northwestern’s admission’s committee is unpredictible and, most of all, you are still within the mid 50% range in terms of your stats. That is one of the reasons I love great Midwestern schools like Northwestern and Chicago…they are not purely numbers driven.

You are merely a Junior, so here’s what I would recommend. Raise your SAT as much as you can. You have a 1310 right now…see if you can raise it to 1400. You still have 3 months left to this year, all summer and the first half of next year, so do not waste time…do as well as you can (on your AP exams, SATs and school grades).

Finally, if you know Northwestern is your dream school, apply early decision. I am not sure of recent stats, but traditionally, Northwestern accepts close to 50% of its ED applicants (compared to 25%-30% for regular applicants). But for that, you must make sure that Northwestern is your dream school and that you can afford paying for it assuming you get in.
