Chances?

I am a African American Female high school junior from California my school is in the top 200 for the best schools in the nation. During my freshman year I went to a school that wasn’t so good. Then I move sophomore year to a very difficult school with a lot of pressure. So my grades dropped that year so it brought down my gpa a bit. Also i am from a single parent household. Suffered from a medical condition brought down my gpa a little in sophmore year.

I want to be an English Major.

I was an English major at Tufts. :-)

You have very impressive SAT scores. Your GPA and EC’s are good too. My daughter got into Tufts with a 3.7 uw GPA from a very selective private school. She had a 1490 on her SAT’s. I think you have a very good shot at Tufts. Are you considering any other schools?

NYU, Boston College, Boston University and Cornell are my choices for east coast schools. I am applying to five UC’s

You should know Tufts is aggressively recruiting Af-Am applicants with good stats and scores as you have. You have a good chance, your stats/scores put you in the ballpark,a nd your URM status will give you a boost.

I, too, was an English major at Tufts!

I was also an English major at Tufts (though long ago), and I have been involved with the admissions office as an alum interviewer for many years.
I think you’ve got a very good shot.
Two things: First, do you have leadership positions in your ECs? If so, make that clear; show what you’ve done to make a difference.
Second, make your essay(s) sing! They need to hear, as Dean of Admissions Lee Coffin would say, your “voice.”

Good advice, WCAS.

I would ask, too, what your rank is because your GPA is not stellar, but perhaps if you are still top 5, 10%, then that just shows your school has grade deflation.
