Chances? :-)

Hey all… I was wondering if anyone could look over my stats and lemme know if I have a good chance of getting in ED as a legacy (dad went)

Racer,Gender: White Male
GPA:3.9
HPA:5.0
Rank: 12 of 600
SAT:2200 (Math 770, CR 720, Writing 710)
SAT II: Bio 750, History 710, Math 800
ACT: 34 composite
APs: Bio, Chem, English Lang, English Lit, Calc, Micro and Macro, World, US, Stats, Spanish, Gov with 8 5’s (National AP Scholar)

ECs: NHS (officer), Math, Spanish NHS, Varsity Swim, Varsity Cross Country

I was also wondering how I would do on financial aid if my family has a combined income less than $60k.

If you guys could help me out I would really appreciate it. Thanks.

^ I think you have a good shot with those scores + ED + legacy. ECs are a little generic, unless you’re deeply into math / swim / XC.

You should get full / nearly full aid, no loans.

but wait, your dad is an alum and your combined family income is less than 60k/year? that’s surprising, does your fam have a huge amount of assets already accumulated? otherwise you’d be a rarity.

The thing is that my parents own a business so, on paper, we have very little income. I am not sure exactly how it works, but supposedly to the government and anyone else who checks, we are more or less dirt poor.

And in regards to the ECs, I have been on math for 3 years and have gone to the state competition 3 times. Swimming I have been doing for 2 years. Is that good enough?

^ they’ll consider your assets and income when you apply, the only people who can tell you about FA is the FA office.

“gone to the state competition 3 times.”

what does this mean? travelling to tournaments is meaningless, was there a competitive process to get there, did you succeed at it. Same with swimming being part of the swimming club for 2 years is close to meaningless, they need to see passion, involvement, commitment and achievement.

Hey ppl,
I’m just a newcomer to all the U.S. Applications. Im just scrolling through all these forums and just see just rlly rlly bright ppl, ppl wid 4 GPA and many AP subjects. But is it necessary to get a high GPA in order to get into an ivy league. Isn’t it still possible to get in with a GPA as low as 3.2 and is heavily involved in many e/c activities, has a good SAT score and sends great college essays?

No, not unless your EC’s are world-changing or your family has donated a wing. Think about it, auliab. Everyone and their brother wants to go to the Ivy League schools. They have acceptance rates in the single-digits. They have more qualified people than they know what to do with. Why do they need to go down to the 3.2 level when they have more than enough straight A students to fill their classes several times?
