NJ - White Female

GPA: 3.34 (weighted) (9th-11th cumulative)
SAT CR: 560 Math: 520 Writing: 680

Freshman year I took 1 honors class
Sophomore and junior year I took 2 honors classes
This year I am taking 2 honors classes and 3 AP classes

My GPA increased a lot from sophomore year (3.1) to junior year (3.5) so upward trend.

I’m planning on writing an essay even though I was told I didn’t need to. Anything to help me.

My extracurriculars are:

-I run my own bookselling business
-I am in my school’s literary magazine club. Last year, we won a national award from Scholastic.
-I am in the Drama Club.
-I am in a club in my school that deals with issues like Darfur.

My school does not rank so I can’t use the calculator. What are my chances? Thank you.

I’d use the calculator anyway and just plug in a conservative estimate of your class rank – maybe 50%. You’ll need to convert the SAT to ACT, I think.

As you probably know, admittance is strictly a numbers thing. Your ECs and AP course load don’t matter. You’re rewarded for AP work if your GPA is weighted because of them, however. Iowa does accept weighted GPAs.

Also, note that the RAI thresholds are a bit higher for OOS and for engineering, so make sure you’re looking at the right one.

And if you’re just under, don’t fret. As part of the very short application, you can request a review of your record for special consideration. That’s the point where you’d call out your ECs and upward trending grades. When you speak of essay, this is the only opportunity for you to plug yourself.

Best of luck.

Thank you for your reply. I know my percentile just not my exact rank. I entered into the calculator the lowest rank I could possibly be (I know the # of students in my class) and my RAI was 562.

You might check the numbers you entered. The threshold is 255, 300 would be considered very high. Did you enter SAT rather than ACT? Count those courses correctly? I’m not sure a 562 is humanly possible!

Hahah oops I meant 262! LOL my bad.

You definitely have a good chance of getting in. I have a 2.9 GPA and a 26 on my ACT and my school doesn’t do class rank either. Good activities too. Definitely apply.
