ACTIVITIES

-4 year varsity swimming, 3 team records as a junior, captain junior and senior year
-9 years club swimming, 3 hours a day, 48 weeks per year. Raised $1200 for 3 years in a row, which kept the team from dissipating as a result of economic problems. Junior Olympics in the most competitive region for club swimming
-State Beach lifeguard (12): 120 hour training program during May (AP testing month and finals prep month yay!), 20% pass rate, 40 hrs per week over summer. Insane CPR, bleeding, first aid creds
-CA junior lifeguard assistant instructor (9,10): A month out of the summer dedicating every day to ocean awareness and lifeguard preparation.
-Camp Matz volunteer: camp for mentally and physically disabled adults. Not the usual “mission trip” where you go and help build houses. We spend time with these campers who all have disabilities and you create a bond even though they might not have the communication skills to tell/show you.
-Big Brothers and Big Sisters (11,12): During the founding year, i was VP. We had 40+ people sign up. You help an at-risk youth once a week for the entire school year
-Ignite Mentorship (11,12): Weekly mentorship program where you are assigned a group of 3-4 freshman and give them someone to look to during the stressful high school transition.
-Misc. tutoring stuff (9-12).

Most of my activites focus on mentoring and lifeguarding/swimming. There is breadth in my activities, but each one has depth and meaning for me.

EXTRA STUFFFFF

-Letter of recs from AP lit teacher and Spanish teacher
-Essay on lifeguard training
-Completed why trinity essay
-Completed letter from friend

I am applying ED and my dad and uncle went to duke…so there is a legacy aspect. Both are involved w/ alum network and do interviews.

Thanks, I shall chance back if requested! =P

views with no comments? lamesauceeeee

I think it could go either way but, I wouldn’t bet against you. I think you have a realistic shot. Good luck.

i think they call this bumping?

You have a good shot, your scores are ok, your EC’s are great!

I’d say you have an okay shot.

Are you good enough to get recruited for swimming? Contact the Duke coach, cause that’d really bump up your chances.

I talked to the coach and they have improved a ton in the past 3 years…and swimming there is not realistic

Duke seems like a low reach with your GPA/legacy/ECS. Test scores are weak but good essays should be able to get you in

yeah i feel like my essay is pretty solid! but test scores as in ACT?

I think you have pretty good chance of getting in as long as you have good essays and recs. good luck! :)

Sorry for a 10 day late chance! I just checked my own chance thread for the first time in a a while. Like most everybody else, I would agree that you have a decent chance. Your ACT is slightly lower than what one might expect to see from a competitive applicant to Duke, but your awesome EC’s help make up for it. Good luck! :)
