I’ve been recently accepted into UC Riverside for undeclared physical sciences in their college of natural and agricultural sciences, and also by San Jose State University college of engineering
When I was applying for Riverside, I wanted to eventually make my way into mechanical engineering but wasn’t confident i could get into that major, so I selected what at the time seemed like a relatively similar option, Physical sciences. what I didn’t realize then was that that undeclared major mostly leads to biology majors
long story short, I’m unsure if it’s worth attempting to switch from UCR college of natural sciences to college of engineering, or simply take SJSU college of engineering
Here is a link on changing into ME at UCR. If you think you can meet these conditions, then I would take the chance at UCR. IF not, the direct admit at SJSU is the safest route.

can you explain to me what the different units categories mean?
You are an in-coming Freshman, so you will be under the first category of 0-45 units, since you have not taken any classes at UCR. You need to take the classes listed under that category, meet the required grades and GPA, then you will be allowed to transfer into that major. I would talk to an Engineering advisor directly if you have any questions or concerns. They should be able to tell you how difficult it would be to change your major, since they would have the statistics available. Good Luck.
I’d go with San Jose, it’s an excellent school and you will be able to start your learning path immediately. If it doesn’t suit you, you can always try to transfer to UCR for upper division.
