So here’s my story. It’d be great if people could give me their best inputs and advices for my situation: (I’m currently a 2nd semester freshman at NYU)
I grew up in Maryland all my life. In high school, I thought that I wanted to study history and eventually go to law school. But recently (like 2~3 weeks ago), I seriously couldn’t see myself studying history for 4 years and going to law school. I found out my love for computer programming. With that said, I realized that I’d basically be saving tons of money and getting a better education in CompSci if I transferred to College Park.
So right now, I’m filling out my transfer application for the March 1st priority deadline (it’s quite late, I know).
I’m basically set to transfer to College Park given that:
I get accepted
some/all of my credits from NYU transfer to College Park
I can graduate with a degree in CompSci within 6 semesters in College Park (3 years a.k.a graduate on time)

I have some AP scores that may help:
US Govt & Pol (3), Calc AB (4), World History (3), US Lang (3), MicroEcon (3), US History (4)

The problem is, I am currently in something called the Liberal Studies Program at NYU which basically makes us take the General Education requirements in our first semesters. I took courses like Cultural Foundation I & II, Social Foundation I & II, Writing I & II, Life Science, and my major Intro to CompSci.

Do you think the mixture of my NYU courses and AP scores will allow me to graduate from UMCP on time with a degree in CompSci?

Also, Does anyone know when I need to send my AP scores if I’m applying for priority deadline March 1st? The Transfer Applicant Checklist doesn’t mention AP scores at all.

I’d REALLY appreciate any sort of input. And thank you for reading this entire post.

**Please note that if you if begin the CS course sequence with CMSC131, completing the CS degree will take a minimum of 7 terms. You may have seen this already but in case not, here is the URL with additional information:

Thanks for that link. Since UMCP won’t accept credit for CompSci taken from other schools, I guess my last option is to take the exemption test and see how I do.

I’m a junior in CS here, so I think I can help. First, of all, none of your CS courses will transfer, but there’s this exemption exam you can take to get out of CMSC131 (Object Oriented Programming I). It’s not very hard, and all you need is a 70, so if you know what’re you’re doing and know a bit of java you should be fine. And yes, you can graduate on time, but you’re going to have to do some heavy lifting in your junior and senior years and load up on upper level electives. I won’t go into detail, but basically you’re going to have to take 7 400 level classes in 3 semesters, which doesn’t sound that bad, but they take A LOT of time. The good thing is that CS doesn’t have many requirements outside of CS besides Gen-Eds so you’re free to take really easy classes or classes that you’re interested in. And just a side note, the CS program here is really awesome! They require a lot of work but isn’t that hard and they teach you really useful stuff. Many of the top companies recruit here, like Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Cisco, Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, so it’s really awesome to feel wanted lol. I got an internship offer from Amazon in Seattle and I’m super pumped to go there this summer. Hope this helped.

Even if you graduate a semester late, it should be much cheaper than NYU, and as of now it’s a very employable major. I would’t worry so much about when you’ll graduate
